Oppose Offshore Drilling in Environmentally Vulnerable Areas

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Cancel plans for offshore drilling in risky, environmentally sensitive areas and invest instead in green energy.

Every day, our need for clean, sustainable energy grows as environmental damage from traditional power harvesting becomes more severe. The United States desperately needs to prevent harm caused by rampant carbon emissions by finding affordable alternatives to oil and natural gas. Unfortunately, the Obama administration has delayed our country’s green energy innovation yet again, opting instead to expand offshore oil drilling in risky, vulnerable areas including the Gulf of Mexico and parts of the Arctic.

Obama’s five-year plan opens up new areas in the Arctic to oil drilling, including the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. These areas currently serve as critical habitat for polar bears, who are already suffering rapid habitat loss due to melting polar ice caps. And because of their remote locations, the marine ecosystems in these seas would likely never recover from an oil spill–relief efforts would simply not be able to reach the bulk of the spilled oil. Meanwhile, the Gulf of Mexico is still reeling from the massive damage incurred by the Deepwater Horizon disaster, when more than 200 million gallons of oil were spilled into its waters. Such an event should be due cause to exercise caution in future drilling projects, but the president’s plan only opens up more of the area for drilling.

Such critical and fragile areas should never be exploited for oil. Tell President Obama to halt his administration’s plan for further drilling and invest in clean energy development instead.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Obama,

I was disheartened to learn of your administration’s new plan to open up areas of the Arctic and the Gulf of Mexico for offshore oil drilling. The levels of carbon dioxide in regions like the Arctic are now at unprecedented highs, while local wildlife like the polar bear struggles to sustain its populations due to melting ice caps. The Gulf of Mexico is still recovering from one of the worst oil spills in all of human history. Through unchecked industrial development, America has done unspeakable damage to the world’s environment. It’s time to take responsibility for our actions and alter our course for a brighter, greener future.

The United States should be at the forefront of green energy development, not wallowing in the sludge of decades past. I ask that you halt this plan for further offshore drilling and instead develop sustainable infrastructure for clean energy.

Sincerely,

  1. They have no conscience until the devastating effects come around to them, but this time it will be too late.
