Support Republican Lawmaker’s Effort to Address Climate Change

Target: Carlos Curbelo, Representative, United States House of Representatives

Goal: Back Republican climate change legislation vehemently opposed by majority of party.

Republican Representative Carlos Curbelo is breaking with a majority in his own party by strongly advocating for government action to address climate change. He has proposed legislation to reduce climate impacts and strengthen flood infrastructure. This is critically needed in his low-lying coastal district in Florida, which has already been heavily impacted by climate-related sea level rise.

Rep. Curbelo’s passion for climate change mitigation is not shared by his Republican colleagues. A ThinkProgress review found nearly 60 percent of conservative lawmakers had expressed doubt that humans contributed to climate change. This has been echoed repeatedly by President Trump in aggressively moving the United States away from meaningful climate action.

The 2018 mid-term elections present an opportunity for Congress to wade back into climate policy. If the Democratic Party regains a majority in the House of Representatives, it could work with moderate Republicans such as Representative Curbelo to draft bipartisan climate change legislation. Lawmakers from deeply conservative states such as Texas, which have benefited significantly from the rise in renewable energy, may also be open to pushing back against the anti-science, anti-climate Trump agenda.

It is critical that Republican voices in opposition to climate change denial and apathy be cultivated. Please sign the below petition praising Representative Curbelo for having the courage to defy his party and advocate in the best interests of his constituents.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Curbelo,

I am writing to thank you for your courage in advocating for government action to combat climate change. As you are aware, a majority of the Republican Party continues to willfully ignore the overwhelming evidence supporting man-made contribution to climate change. This apathy has only been emboldened by the Trump Administration’s all-out assault on climate research and environmental regulations.

It will take a bipartisan group of lawmakers such as yourself putting their constituents’ needs before political considerations to keep the United States engaged in this fight. Please continue leading the Republican charge for climate action.

Sincerely,

  1. Force Republicans to buy all the shoreline that will soon be flooded. Then they either fix it or lose their money. Oh, dear!
