Target: Gilbert Police Department
Goal: Take immediate action to find culprits of hate crimes against gay couple and their family
When vandalism, arson, and breaking and entering are reported to the authorities, one would imagine that immediate action would follow such events. But the Gilbert Police Department is taking its sweet time in investigating the harassment of a gay couple living in a predominately Mormon neighborhood in Gilbert, Arizona. Felix Bermea and his partner noticed the harassment at first when they discovered crude graffiti on their cars and driveway. The bushes near their home were then set on fire, one of which was dangerously close to the house. Finally, an intruder broke into the house and wrote profanity on the walls. Perhaps the most disturbing part of this is the fact that Bermea and his partner have four children, one of them a disabled nine-year-old girl. The profanity was written on the walls of the children’s rooms.
An investigation was opened 9 weeks after the original vandalism began, after Bermea had been filing reports every five or six days. The police department states they are taking the crimes “very seriously,” and yet Bermea has had to repeatedly ask them to take action: “I feel like they’re not taking it seriously,” the father said of the police who are handling the inquiry. “You got to act really dumb to pretend something’s not happening.”
Sign the petition now to demand that the Gilbert Police Department increases their efforts in finding the culprits behind these hate crimes, and ask them to never again take their time in opening an investigation.
Dear Gilbert Police Department,
It has come to my attention that you have failed to properly investigate the harassment of a couple living in Gilbert. Felix Bermea and his partner have repeatedly come to you for help to no avail after their cars were written on, their bushes set on fire, and their house broken into and vandalized. Although you state that you are taking the crimes seriously, your lack of involvement in these crimes speaks otherwise.
The sexual orientation of a client is no reason to put half an effort into your work, particularly if children are being harassed as well. I respectfully demand that you do your job and properly investigate these hate crimes that have been carried out on the Bermea family. It is necessary for the criminals to be caught so the Bermea children can sleep soundly again and so an innocent couple can raise them peacefully. It is your duty to uphold justice, and I urge you to remember that the next time you decide to wait 9 weeks before investigating a reported crime.
