Target: U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack
Goal: Revoke Ringling Bros. Circus animal exhibitor license for horrific treatment of elephants
Children of all ages are invited to enjoy the spectacle that it is the Ringling Bros. Circus, including clown DJ Dean, Dmitri the Strong Man, Motorcycle Mania, Hand Balancers, and Epic Asian Elephants who are savagely beaten and tortured right up to the very second before the show!
Photographs and videos have been made public by Ringling whistle blowers, revealing the horrific treatment elephants are submitted to from capture through training. Enslavement usually occurs in infancy, when it is easiest for captors to break the animal’s spirit, essentially brainwashing them (through physical torture) into obedience. They are tied, contorted, beaten, poked, and hooked. The beatings continue throughout the lives of the elephants. They are kept in poorly ventilated boxcars for up to 60 or 70 hours at a time when travelling. These are all blatant violations of the Animal Welfare Act and punishable by criminal law.
Ringling has already been cited by the United States Department of Agriculture several times for animal cruelty. U.S. Secretary of Agriculture has imposed the biggest animal exhibitor fine to date ($270,000) on Ringling. The next step, which should be taken immediately, is to revoke the circus’s right to detain elephants altogether. Please sign below to put this step into action.
Dear U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack,
It is now public knowledge what Ringling’s trainers are doing to their elephants. After coming home from the circus, the six year-old child can hop on the computer and see the same great elephant they saw standing on its hind legs in all its glory, only now being cussed at with hooks in its skin by a trainer on YouTube. Public knowledge of the cruelty should not be reason in itself for the revoking of Ringling’s exhibitor license, but it should serve as impetus for immediacy in that revocation.
Please conduct an immediate investigation and initiate criminal action against Ringling and any other responsible parties, including permanent revocation of the circus’s exhibitor license.
