Target: Public Advocate Of The United States’s Virginia Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio
Goal: Hold anti-LGBT group accountable for using a same-sex couple’s engagement photo without permission on a homophobic mailer.
When Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere got engaged two years ago, they celebrated with a special photo shoot. Much to their shock and dismay, one of the now-married couple’s photographs was stolen by an anti-gay hate group. The group, Public Advocate Of The United States, used their cherished photo without permission for a hateful anti-gay mailer. Tell Virginia Supervisor Eugene Delgaudio, the group’s leader, that the public will not tolerate theft and hatred against LGBT people.
According to a recent report by LGBTQ Nation, the couple had no idea that their engagement photo was being used in an attack mailer against political candidates. The words “Family Values?” were placed in quotation marks, indicating that this loving, committed couple was somehow to blame for society’s ills. Edwards shared his anger over the degrading use of his engagement photo on his wedding blog:
“I want to share what this picture means to me…It is a reminder of the happiness I felt the day he proposed to me and of the excitement I had all throughout our engagement. It represents hope and it represents love. Or at least it did…Now I see it faded and brown with a big red, blood-emulating slash across our bodies. It cuts us in half just below our hearts.”
Nevertheless, Delgaudio seems unremorseful for his group’s actions. According to the Denver Post, he told reporters that his organization is a “non-profit” and charged liberal groups with stealing some of his group’s images–not that this has anything to do with the issue at hand.
Kristina Hill Photography, the company that took the couple’s engagement photos, left a comment on the article stating: “As the photographer who shot this image and who this image legally belongs to, this is heart breaking on two levels (at least)…this image should never have been reproduced without my permission, which would have never been given in this instance.”
Clearly, this Southern Poverty Law Center-identified hate group is unremorseful about destroying memories of one of the happiest days in the lives of two people. By signing the petition below, you will tell Public Advocate Of The United States that hatefully manipulating photographs is unacceptable and wrong.
Dear Mr. Delgaudio,
When Brian Edwards and Tom Privitere got engaged two years ago, they weren’t expecting your group to snatch their cherished photo and plaster it across anti-gay mailers. Public Advocate Of The United States has stolen a precious moment and altered it into something vile.
LGBT people deserve better than this remorseless abuse and sheer hatred. Gay and lesbian couples must be treated with the dignity, respect, and privacy afforded to straight couples.
It is imperative that you cease these hurtful actions against loving, committed LGBT couples and issue an apology for this extremely offensive mailer. Please commit to taking action immediately.
