Target: City of Santa Monica
Goal: Make it illegal to use animals as entertainment and for profit on the Santa Monica Promenade.
Santa Monica’s third street Promenade is famous for its street performances, but things got a little out of hand when the city decided to allow animals on their streets as entertainment. Several times a week, a man comes to the Promenade dressed ridiculously with his “pet” monkey. This man will dress the monkey up is a similar costume to his and keep him on a leash in the middle of the street. The monkey will perform silly little acts to amaze the crowd while the man just sits back in a chair smoking a cigarette. If the monkey stops doing his performances, the man will push and yell at the monkey. Many people pass by and stare at the monkey, which is terrifying for the animal. If passers-by want to touch the monkey, the man will charge them several dollars. And if people want a picture with the monkey, they will have to pay an extra few more dollars.
This is pure animal abuse and should be illegal. The city of Santa Monica must ban the use of animals for entertainment and for profit. Animals are not ours to dress up in ridiculous outfits nor to force to do silly performances just so that the public will be entertained. No one ever gave people the right to exploit animals, much less profit from forcing them to do things that do not come naturally to them.
Public animal performances should be absolutely illegal in the city of Santa Monica. Please sign this petition to say that this kind of animal cruelty is not acceptable.
Dear City of Santa Monica,
I am kindly yet strongly urging you to stop the use of live animals as entertainment on your third street Promenade. It is not moral to use animals as the entertainment of people nor is it moral to use them for profit. Please stop allowing street performers to continue the animal abuse and exploitation of captive monkeys and other animals. Make it illegal to allow animals as entertainment and to use them as profit in your city, especially on your public streets.
Please take a moment to realize that what you are allowing is wrong and is supporting the exploitation and cruelty of animals. I encourage you to please take into consideration these concerns and to strongly address this issue.
