U.N. Secretary-General: Address Human Rights Violations in Egypt

Target: Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations

Goal: Urge United Nations head to end silence regarding widespread human rights abuses by the Egyptian government.

Newly elected Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, has not spoken out publicly against rampant human rights violations in Egypt. This represents an abdication of responsibility at a critical time, as world powers such as the United States increasingly turns away from civil rights advocacy.

The Egyptian military under the direction of President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has been accused of carrying out extra-judicial executions of political opponents, jailing human rights activists and torture of civilians. This was explicitly shown in a video recording received by Human Rights Watch, in which two bound and blind-folded men are carried from a military vehicle, made to kneel, and are executed by an Egyptian soldier. It also contradicted an official government account of the slayings which stated the men were rebels killed in battle.

A restrained reaction to human rights abuses in Egypt from the United Nations may be related to uncertainty regarding American interests. President Trump has expressed vocal support for President al-Sisi and pledged to increase financial support for their military campaign against ISIS. The Trump Administration has also hinted that it may cut funding for the United Nations.

Protection of global human rights should not be dictated by the current American administration. Please sign the below petition urging the United Nations to send a clear message of independence by taking a strong stance against the Egyptian government’s actions.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary-General Guterres,

I am writing to urge you to publicly denounce the widely-reported human rights violations committed in Egypt. This includes torture, murder of political opponents and incarceration of civil rights activists. As you are aware a foundational tenant of the United Nations is protection of human rights and your silence represents an abdication of that responsibility.

At a time when the United States has largely turned away from human rights advocacy, the U.N. is needed more than ever to ensure these rights are protected. Please demonstrate your strength and commitment to that role by taking a strong stance against the Egyptian government’s actions.

Sincerely,

  1. The UN needs to speak out about this. And Trump’s support of this brutal Egyptian regime is unconscionable.
