Add Social Media Posts to the Presidential Record

Target: Nancy Pelosi, House Minority Leader

Goal: Support the addition of tweets and other social media posts to the presidential record.

Tweets and social media posts could soon become a part of the presidential record, thanks to Communications Over Various Feeds Electronically for Engagement Act (COVFEFE), introduced by Representative Mike Quigley. The legislation aims to expand the Presidential Records Act so that it includes social media as “documentary material.” If the bill is passed, Donald Trump’s online postings, most notably tweets, would be archived as part of his official presidential record.

Trump is known for using his personal Twitter account to comment on serious policy matters; he also deletes some of his tweets, which he will no longer be able to do if the COVFEFE Act becomes law. Representative Quigley said, “If the president is going to take to social media to make sudden public policy proclamations, we must ensure that these statements are documented and preserved for future reference. Tweets are powerful, and the president must be held accountable for every post.”

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Pelosi,

On Monday, Representative Mike Quigley introduced the COVFEFE Act, a bill that aims to add tweets and other social media posts to the official archive under the Presidential Records Act. If passed, the bill would add Donald Trump’s tweets to his presidential record, and he would no longer be allowed to delete tweets.

Considering how heavily Mr. Trump relies on Twitter to discuss presidential matters, it is vital that his tweets be treated as part of his official presidential record and that he be held accountable for the material he posts to social media.

I strongly urge you to support this bill in Congress and do all you can to make sure it is passed.

Sincerely,
