Don’t Compromise Vital Flood Insurance Legislation for Anti-Abortion Beliefs

Target: Representative Rand Paul

Goal: Don’t stall vital flood insurance legislation in order to pressure the legislature to adopt personhood amendment.

A federal bill which would increase government funding of flood insurance is currently stalled in the Senate due to obstruction by Representative Rand Paul. Representative Paul is stalling the passage of the flood insurance bill in order to attach a fetal personhood amendment to it before it is passed.

Flood insurance is a vital program, particularly at this time of year. Hurricane season is upon us, and many citizens will inevitably suffer significant damage to their houses in the next few months. Without funding for flood insurance, many Americans will suffer serious financial harm from the inability to insure themselves against water damage. It is absolutely vital that Rep. Paul understand this fact and end his resistance before many Americans end up paying the consequences.

As the flood insurance bill is bipartisan and non-controversial, it can be used as a vehicle for passing extreme policy; representatives are loath to disagree with such a vital policy and are likely to support its passage, even with an unpalatable amendment.

A fetal personhood amendment, such as the one Rep. Paul is attempting to attach to the flood insurance bill, would declare life beginning at the time of conception. Such a definition would outlaw virtually every abortion (depending upon the final language surrounding rape, incest, and health concerns, it may ban all abortions), and most chemical forms of birth control.

Sign this petition to protest Rep Paul’s stalling of the flood insurance bill and demand that he stop it now. Stalling a vital bill in order to serve a controversial and unrelated ideological fight is an abrogation of one’s duty as a legislator.

Dear Representative Rand Paul,

You are currently stalling the passage of a flood insurance funding bill in an attempt to promote a fetal personhood amendment. This action is unacceptable to many, and could result in the widespread suffering of numerous Americans.

Flood insurance, particularly during the upcoming hurricane season, is vital and any obstruction of such legislation for unrelated matters is negligent. Many households, particularly in the south and south-east, are at grave risk of flooding damage and have no way to protect themselves without insurance.

Put plainly, flood insurance is entirely unrelated to abortion rights, and there is no reason for an abortion rights amendment to be attached to a flood insurance bill. If you truly believe in fetal personhood, it is well within your rights and abilities to write and propose a bill legislating it as a stand-alone issue. Do not stall a bill, vital to the health of many, to push an ideological agenda supported by a minority.

I, as well as everybody else to sign this petition, implore you to stop your resistance to the current flood insurance funding bill: do not put your personal ideology above the needs of millions of at-risk Americans.
