Target: United States Congress
Goal: Provide more federal money to small farms to promote locally grown, sustainable food.
Many people in the United States are interested in buying fresh, locally grown food. This food can be hard to find or expensive because there is little government support given to small farms. On the other hand, billions of dollars are given to the large farms that provide food with questionable methods such as heavy pesticide use and cramped animal cages. There is now a bill that has been introduced to Congress which seeks to change this.
The Local Farms, Food and Jobs Act will provide affordable local food to many people. The bill will give more federal money to small local farms, which will make local food a simple and affordable choice for more people. Federal food dollars will also be available to buy local food, meaning that those on food stamps will be able to greatly improve their diet by buying much fresher food. Also, public schools will be able to buy local fresh food for their students, which will help to decrease childhood obesity rates.
Senator Sherrod Brown, a supporter of this bill, has said, ‘American consumers want access to healthy, fresh foods and farmers should be able to sell it to them. Local and regional food systems help the communities where farmers and consumers live growing the economy and creating jobs while improving public health and nutrition.’ There is no reason this bill should not be passed. Supporting local farmers instead of industrial farms will help the economy and provide fresh, affordable food to people across the country. Tell Congress to support and pass this bill.
Dear United States Congress,
There is a bill recently introduced that will support the growth of small, local farms. It will help lower the price of fresh, locally grown food so that it can be affordable to many more people across the country, including those on food stamps. The affordability of fresh local food will greatly improve the diets of many people, and will help to combat the growing rate of obesity in the United States.
I ask you to support and pass this bill. Small farms are more sustainable, and the legislation will also be beneficial to the economy by helping small farms grow. Consumers want to be able to afford healthy, locally grown food, and this bill will allow that affordability to happen by supporting the local small farmers who provide the food.
