Target: 40 Days For Life
Goal: To prevent an anti-choice campaign from closing vital Planned Parenthood centers
40 Days For Life is a Bible-driven campaign that focuses on shutting down Planned Parenthood offices and other clinics that provide abortions. Founded officially in 2004 in Texas, the campaign gained momentum in 2007 and officially runs for 40 days each year in cities where “activists” gather to attempt to strip women of their right to choose. In 2012 alone, three Planned Parenthoods have been shut down: two in Iowa, and one in Pennsylvania.
The campaign’s tactics of preventing women from obtaining medical treatment include praying, fasting, and standing outside Planned Parenthood clinics to deliver uncalled-for judgment. Furthermore, the campaign claims to do “community outreach”. In other words, the voices of the campaign continually preach that the overall decision regarding the happenings of a woman’s uterus do not belong to the woman herself, but rather with other people who claim to know her life and her body more than she.
40 Days For Life’s website states that according to their reports, 5,928 “babies” have been saved since 2007, but there is no mention of where this evidence came from. A better fact would be that 5,928 women were forcefully removed of their rights over their uteri. Sign the petition now to tell this anti-choice organization once and for all to keep their Bible-backed opinions to themselves and save Planned Parenthoods everywhere.
Dear 40 Days For Life,
I am writing to question your resolve to shut down Planned Parenthood organizations throughout the nation. First and foremost, I must stress the fact that taking vital healthcare away from women is not compassionate nor is it wise. Contrary to what you believe, abortions are not the only procedure Planned Parenthood clinics provide. They provide cancer screenings, sex education, STD education, and contraceptives to men and women alike. They treat women struggling with infertility, give options to women with ectopic pregnancies, and provide counseling for those who have been in abusive relationships or are suffering from depression. In addition, they are sure to keep abstinence and adoption in the long list of options for women looking to become sexually active or women facing an unplanned pregnancy.
After reviewing your shameful campaign and your attempts to shut down many of these beneficial clinics, I would like to deliver to you a hard fact: you will never stop abortions. A woman who has chosen that for medical, economic, and personal reasons to terminate her unwanted pregnancy will find a way to obtain one whether it suits your opinion or not. They will continue happening because as long as unwanted pregnancies continue to occur, women will seek them. Would you prefer women to risk their lives by aborting their embryos with coat hangers in alleyways, or would you prefer them to have a place to go where they can have a safe procedure? If you support the first option, please do not call yourself “pro-life”.
I urge you to consider putting a stop to unplanned pregnancies before you shut down Planned Parenthoods on your quest to uphold your own personal and religious beliefs. If you are against abortions, get to the root of the problem. Taking away a woman’s right over her own body is not an option.
