Free American Prisoner Held Abroad for Over Ten Years

Target: Mostafa Pourmohammadi, Iran’s Minister of Justice

Goal: Free Robert Levinson, an American federal agent kidnapped and unlawfully incarcerated in Iran for a decade.

Robert Alan “Bob” Levinson is an American former FBI and DEA agent who went missing in Iran in 2007. The Iranian government’s responses to repeated efforts to locate Levinson have ranged from denial of knowledge of a “Levinson” being in the country, to vague admittance that they have, in fact, incarcerated him. However, journalists and U.S. government officials have noted that Levinson was, in reality, taken prisoner in Iran, and correspondences between the Iranian and American governments indicate that Tehran is effectively using Levinson as a “bargaining chip” or form of leverage in ongoing negotiations with Washington. His passport has not appeared outside Iran since his disappearance, and a series of photos of the imprisoned Levinson released since 2007 make certain that he is still in the hands of Iranian authorities.

The Iranian government is notorious for taking political prisoners, and otherwise abducting and detaining both foreign nationals and individuals deemed dangerous to its political regime. It has been reprimanded for its continuous abuses of human rights, and for the severe and inhumane conditions in which its prisoners live.

Mr. Levinson went missing while (allegedly) researching a tobacco-smuggling case on Iran’s Kish Island. He was then 58 years old. He is now 69, and if not released soon, may spend the remaining years of his life estranged from, and prevented from communicating with, his loved ones.

It is atrocious to condemn an innocent man to such conditions, and we must demand that Iran stop this injustice.

Dear Minister Pourmohammadi,

Please urge your government to immediately release Robert Alan “Bob” Levinson, who has been unlawfully incarcerated in Iran since 2007. Mr. Levinson is an American national, as well as a husband and a father. He is now nearing 70 years old, and may, given current circumstances, die in prison.

Despite previous claims from Iranian officials, the evidence is now overwhelming that Levinson did not simply disappear in the country; rather, that he was abducted in the line of duty and has been held against his will for over a decade.

Mr. Levinson has committed no crimes, and his continued detention is a clear and atrocious abuse of human rights. Please end this man’s internment and return him to his country and loved ones.
