Don’t Cut Human Rights Officers from the United Nations

Target: Joaquín Alexander Maza Martelli, Council President

Goal: Don’t cut the number of human rights officers serving the United Nations.

China is pushing to cut the number of human rights officers from the United Nations. To defend human rights around the globe, the United Nation employs “officers” to investigate and report on alleged abuses. They give voices to the voiceless. However, China wants to drastically cut their funding.

China would like to cut 19 officers who investigate the Central African Republic, as well as an unknown number of officers in Mali, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and other nations. Russia is supporting this move. If funding is cut, women and children, who are often at the hands of extreme violence in these areas, will have no one to defend and protect them.

China, which is a nation known for its human rights abuses itself, should not dictate which nations and citizens do and don’t deserve human rights protections. People around the world, no matter which nation they reside in, deserve the chance to live safe and happy lives. Sign the petition and demand that the number of human rights officers protecting people in the world’s most marginalized areas not be cut.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear President Martelli,

China is advocating for severe budget cuts to the United Nations Human Rights Council, which would deplete the number of human rights officers in African nations, as well as other struggling nations throughout the world. These officers help defend human rights and investigate abuses, giving voices to the voiceless.

If these positions are cut, men, women, and children of all ages will face serious danger. China and Russia, both supporters of these cuts, already rob their own citizens of human rights. They shouldn’t rob citizens of other countries of their inalienable rights as well.

Sincerely,

  1. It’s no surprise that a COMMUNIST DICTATORSHIP like China would want to cut the number of human rights officers in the UN!
My question is – why are they even a member of the UN in the first place?

  2. China and human rights??? A contradiction of terms!!!!
