Save Endangered Penguin Species From Extinction

Target: Dr. Allan Freeth, Chief Executive of the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority

Goal: Save the yellow-eyed penguin from extinction.

New Zealand’s yellow-eyed penguin is slowly going extinct. These birds have faced attacks from all sides; in the wild, they are caught and killed by predatory animals, climate change is destroying their homes and robbing them of their food sources, and worst of all, at least half the penguins who die each year are strangled by gill nets used by fisheries. Gill nets have also been responsible for the deaths of other rare aquatic life such as the Maui’s dolphin, another New Zealand native animal that is nearly extinct.

These birds could be completely extinct by the year 2060, which may be a slow decline but it is a decline nonetheless. And with the recent attacks on the environment, it is entirely too possible this decline will speed up and the yellow-eyed penguin’s numbers will drop more every year. We must not only fight for cleaner environments and oceans, but we must work toward the phasing out of gill nets for safer fishing methods. These birds should not have to die just so humans can do their jobs.

We must save these bright-eyed birds before it is too late. Sign this petition to demand stronger protection of this species as well as the ban of gill nets worldwide.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Executive Freeth,

Yellow-eyed penguins are dying out due to many factors, the biggest ones being climate change and gill nets. These birds have been on a slow decline since 2000, but should these factors continue to worsen, they will die out at a faster rate and be completely extinct before the projected year 2060.

Not only must you help us fight harder against climate change, but you must demand the phasing out of gill nets by fisheries. These nearly-invisible nets have strangled at least a third of the yellow-eyed penguin population, and have nearly killed off the Maui’s dolphin population. They are much too dangerous, fisheries need to find safer and more humane means of catching fish.

Please help us protect these beautiful birds from extinction.

Sincerely,

Penguins are most at risk from humans stealing their food. Simply put the exploding human overpopulation and fishing methods take EVERYTHING. Climate change disrupts habitat and food sources. ALL commercial fishing in their habitat should be halted giving them an opportunity to recover from mans greed andi discretion.

This world is becoming such a sick place-no values! Such beautiful creatures have gone extinct already and here we go again. So much waste and excess and little effort toward conservation, or conservation isn’t being taken seriously, and one day everything beautiful will be gone.
