Don’t Give Cars a Free Pass to Pollute

Target: Mitch McConnell, Majority Leader, United States Senate

Goal: Protect public health and the environment from harmful vehicle pollution.

A small group of Senators has put forward legislation aimed at diluting Obama-era vehicle efficiency requirements. The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards were implemented in 2009 with agreement from the auto industry. They require vehicle manufacturers to meet average fleet-wide efficiency targets, which began at 34.1 MPG in 2016, and rise to 54.5 MPG in 2025.

Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards are projected to yield significant benefits if fully implemented. This includes creation of 570,000 new jobs, 3 million less barrels of fuel used per day and a total reduction in greenhouse emissions of 570 million metric tons by 2030.

The proposed bill would weaken efficiency requirements by allowing auto manufacturers to apply credits earned for efficiency improvements which have already been implemented toward future years’ targets. A warning issued by the Union of Concerned Scientists stated this change could result in 155 million metric tons of carbon emissions and overall vehicle efficiency to fall well short of the 54.5 MPG goal.

We cannot afford to lose momentum in the transition to ultra fuel-efficient transportation. Please sign the below petition calling on congressional leadership to reject this proposed measure.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McConnell,

I am writing to urge that you withhold support for Senate bill 1273. If passed, it will significantly weaken the Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, which were implemented with agreement from the auto industry. The CAFE standards are projected to create 570,000 new jobs by 2030 if fully implemented. Towns such as Louisville, Berea and London in your home state of Kentucky which rely on car manufacturing cannot afford to lose that opportunity.

Please help ensure your constituents and all Americans benefit from the continued evolution of fuel efficient vehicles.

Sincerely,

  1. I promise to only by a vehicle if it has the 40 MPG and up. I dislike wasting my money on gas.
