Support Renewable Energy Production on Public Lands

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Increase the percentage of public lands used for renewable energy generation.

Public lands should be managed to benefit to all of the people of the United States; however, that is the not currently the case when it comes to energy generation. The Department of the Interior allows companies to lease public lands for coal, natural gas, and petroleum extraction as well as for renewable energy development. The majority of electricity generated on public lands is sourced from coal. According to a report by the Center for American Progress, coal accounts for 66% of the energy generated from public lands while renewable energy sources account for only 15%. Coal is harmful to human health and the environment and its use for electricity generation is not in the public interest. Therefore, President Barack Obama should issue an executive order that would require land management agencies to increase the amount of publicly owned resources used for renewable energy generation.

Using coal for energy generation contributes to global warming, as when coal is combusted it releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide emissions are one of the leading causes of global warming. Climate change is already occurring and if the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions continues, there will be disastrous effects for humans and the environment. Global warming causes glacial ice to melt, leading to rising sea levels that will displace millions of people. As the climate changes, weather patterns will cause droughts that will result in food shortages. Coal accounts for approximately 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions, so reducing coal emissions by increasing the amount of electricity generated by renewable sources would go a long way towards slowing climate change.

President Barack Obama has the opportunity to ensure that public lands are used for the public good. Coal extraction for energy generation is not in the public interest. Increasing the amount of public resources used to generate renewable energy is better for the public and the environment.

By signing the petition below you will urge President Barack Obama to issue an executive order that would increase the amount of renewable energy generated on public lands.

Dear President Barack Obama,

The federal government is responsible for managing public lands for the benefit of all of the people in the United States. These lands are used for a variety of purposes such as recreation, conservation, and energy generation. Unfortunately, the large majority of electricity generated from resources on public lands comes from coal. Coal is harmful to human health and the environment. Public lands should be used for purposes that benefit the public. Therefore, public land resources should be used to generate renewable energy instead of for coal extraction.

There are millions of acres of public lands that are suitable for renewable energy production. Lands in the southwest could be used to generate solar power, while wind and wave power could be generated on offshore areas managed by the federal government. Federal lands are also appropriate for geothermal energy production. These renewable energy sources will provide electricity without damaging the environment or human health.

I urge you to issue an executive order to increase the amount of renewable energy generated on public lands.
