Punish Police for Alleged Offensive Ableist Remarks

Target: Mark Saunders, Toronto Police Chief

Goal: Remove from duty two officers reportedly responsible for making offensive remarks against a woman with Down syndrome.

Two Toronto police officers were allegedly caught mocking a woman with Down syndrome on a recently disclosed dashcam video recorded late last year. The officers had pulled over a vehicle that had allegedly ran a red light, and after handing the driver a ticket they reportedly began making offensive remarks about one of the passengers’ appearance. On the video, one of the officers refers to the woman as being “disfigured,” while another claims that the car only had “two and a half women.”

These remarks are disturbing and are harmful to those with disabilities, including Down syndrome. Upon hearing about the video, the young woman who was the target of the officers’ cruel jokes, Francie Munoz, said that she felt hurt and was “disgusted.”

While Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders has made a public statement condemning the officers’ words, and has reached out to the family to extend an apology on behalf of his department, more must be done to address the officers’ alleged actions. All too often, those with disabilities or mental illness are subjected to cruel and discriminatory behavior on behalf of law enforcement.

The officers responsible for these remarks must be held accountable. Sign this petition to demand that the police chief remove them from duty and ensure that all other officers be given mandatory training for interacting with those with disabilities.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Chief Saunders,

Last year, two of your officers stopped a vehicle that reportedly had run a red light. Once the officers returned to their vehicle, dashcam footage reveals that they reportedly began making jokes at the expense of one of the passengers, a woman who happens to have Down syndrome. The officers remarked she was “half” a person and was “disfigured.” Not only are such comments totally unprofessional and unbecoming of your department, they are deeply offensive to individuals with disabilities.

We, the undersigned demand that these officers be held accountable. They must be removed from duty and all other officers under your command must be trained appropriately on how to interact with those with disabilities so that incidents such as this do not occur in the future.

Sincerely,
