Don’t Ban Girl From Soccer Team for Having Short Hair

Target: Casey Mann, Executive Director, Nebraska State Soccer Association

Goal: Don’t allow tournaments to discriminate against and disqualify a girl from games based solely on her appearance.

A talented 8-year-old soccer player, Mili Hernandez, was saddened when she heard that both she and her team, the Azzuri Cachoras of Omaha, had been disqualified from participating in a Springfield, Nebraska soccer match due to her appearance, which officials described as looking “like a boy.” This was apparently due to the fact that Hernandez prefers to keep her hair short.

To make matters worse, even after Hernandez’s parents were able to prove their daughter’s biological sex with documentation such as her insurance card, the organization still refused to allow her or her team to participate. This sexist and discriminatory judgment based solely on one girl’s hairstyle sends the wrong message to young athletes and must be challenged.

The parents now have a chance to appeal the tournament organizers’ decision through an appeal with the Nebraska State Soccer Association. Sign this petition to lend your voice to theirs and demand that children like Mili be given a fair chance to play and not be held back simply because their appearance challenges assumed gender norms.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Mann,

I was outraged to learn than an 8-year-old girl from Omaha, Mili Hernandez, was disqualified from a soccer tournament due to the claim that she “looked like a boy,” presumably because she has short hair. This is a ridiculous and arbitrary decision, since a child’s hairstyle has nothing to do with their biological sex or chosen gender.

Disqualifying this girl and her team from competitions sends the wrong message to young athletes and I hope you will overturn the tournament organizers’ decision and ensure that Mili and her team are able to participate in future competitions.

Sincerely,
