Reinstate University of Virginia’s Esteemed First Woman President

Target: Rector and the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia

Goal: Reinstate Teresa Sullivan as President of the University of Virginia.

Teresa Sullivan was the first female president of the University of Virginia of the eight presidents in the institution’s history. After two years of service and a plethora of positive reviews, the Rector and Board of Visitors fired her abruptly with only a few vague justifications. Join faculty, alumni, students and former presidents as they demand transparency and justice from the Board.

A classic struggle between academic freedom and corporatist control is occurring on the typically placid campus of the University of Virginia. A small group of business school alumni on the governing Rector and Board of Visitors has attempted to maneuver the recently selected president out of her job despite the overwhelmingly positive reviews she has received during her terms. This effort has generated widespread protests among all other constituent groups on and off campus and has generated a political backlash, both within the university community and the state of Virginia.

Dr. Sullivan is a highly esteemed educator at both the local and national level. The Rector and Board claim that they decided to issue her termination because the institution has had “incremental, marginal change” during her administration. In the statement they released after the fact, they declare that the institution has need for a leader who is more adaptable to “the realities of the external environment.” These vague arguments do not justify ridding the nation’s first public university of such a superior leader like Dr. Sullivan.

The governor of Virginia has issued a deadline to the Board of Visitors to resolve the situation once and for all at a special meeting to be held on Tuesday, June 26. The widespread university community has mobilized in support of Teresa Sullivan’s reinstatement and the replacement of the responsible Board of Visitors members.

Sign this petition to support students, faculty, alumni and former presidents of UVA in their struggle to ensure strong, fair leadership for their honorable academic institution and demand that the Rector and Board of Visitors reinstate Dr. Sullivan as president immediately.

PETITION LETTER

Dear UVA Rector and Board of Visitors Member,

I am writing in support of the immediate reinstatement of Teresa Sullivan as esteemed President of the University of Virginia.

Teresa Sullivan was the first woman president of the University of Virginia and a highly esteemed educator at both the local and national level. I am extremely disappointed to know that after two years of service and a plethora of positive reviews, the Rector and Board of Visitors has fired her abruptly with only a few vague justifications.

Sullivan.

The widespread university community, including students, alumni, faculty and former presidents, has mobilized in support of Teresa Sullivan’s reinstatement. I urge you to listen to the public’s demands and reinstate Teresa Sullivan as president immediately.

Sincerely,
