Support Carbon-Free Power

Target: Rick Perry, U.S. Secretary of Energy

Goal: Support the research, development, and construction of innovative, safe nuclear power plants.

Nuclear power currently provides about 20 percent of U.S. electricity, and at a time when President Trump’s anti-environment agenda is threatening to increase fossil fuel burning and pollution, this zero-emission source of electricity is crucial to reducing greenhouse gas emissions while providing power to a green future full of electric cars and high-density cityscapes. However, public distrust of the technology has risen following several meltdown incidents over the past few decades, and with cheap natural gas providing more power generation than ever before, many nuclear power plants are shutting their doors early. While nuclear power generation has many flaws, it also has a lot of benefits, and could provide a helpful bridge to a renewables-only future if used to provide energy during peak usage or when the sun isn’t shining and the wind’s not blowing. As such, the U.S. should continue to support innovation in the research, development, and construction of nuclear reactors, to offer the chance at the sustainable future we desperately need.

Nuclear plants can melt down, mining their fuel is environmentally damaging, the electricity is expensive, and the spent fuel is radioactive, but this doesn’t mean there is no hope for change. Startups like Transatomic Power have developed nuclear plants that operate at low pressure to prevent against explosions, do not require containment domes or hulking steam stacks to reduce construction costs, and use fuel much more efficiently than older plants to reduce radioactive waste output.

But as exciting as these innovations are, they require funding, and just like during the first nuclear boom in the 1970s, the federal government has a huge potential to move the ball forward. Sign this petition to inform Energy Secretary Rick Perry about the new innovations and urge him to revolutionize our energy grid and lead us into a safer, cleaner future for all.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Perry,

With more and more nuclear power plants closing their doors in the U.S., it seems like the nuclear energy age has come and gone. But new innovations in the field have the potential to revolutionize the way we generate electricity. While the nuclear plants in operation today are decades old and rely on relatively ancient technology and procedures that make power generation expensive, environmentally harmful, and dangerous, those being designed today are smaller, cheaper, more efficient, and much safer, and could provide an important bridge between the dirty, mostly fossil fuel-fueled power of today, and a completely renewably powered future. Government funding for research, development, and construction from places like the Department of Energy can support and speed that transition, and I write today to ask that you make this a priority of your administration.

Startup companies like Transatomic Power have designed reactors that are smaller, thus reducing costs, operate at lower pressures to eliminate the chance of an explosion, and utilize fuel much more efficiently to reduce waste. Others have designed fuel “pebbles” that cannot melt and plug-and-play small modular reactors that can be entirely transported on a flatbed truck. Funding projects like these could make our clean energy future happen much more quickly, by providing a much safer, more reliable, zero-carbon bridge fuel to provide power when solar panels and wind turbines cannot produce enough power. I urge you to use your position to invest in these technologies to support the energy generation of the future, so that Americans for generations to come are healthy, safe, and prosperous.

Sincerely,

get rid of carbon monoxide not carbon dioxide.

Nuclear power as it is IS NOT, by any stretch of the imagination, safe or environmentally friendly. Not until we have cold fusion. Renewable natural energy is the right solution and if properly implemented will provide just as many jobs, possibly more. Please cut the crap!

Agreed. I wonder why anyone would say nuclear power is safe after the 3.11 disaster in Fukushima. It’s still going on, contaminating the land and people. Please take down this petition and reconsider what you write. There are other options that’s carbon free and not nuke.

  3. CLEAN ENERGY NOW.
