End EPA Staff Layoff Attempts

Target: Mick Mulvaney, Director of the Office of Management and Budget

Goal: Deny funds for EPA buyout attempts to layoff workers.

The Trump administration is planning to further hamper the EPA’s ability to enforce environmental protection laws by offering a buyout and early retirement program to current EPA employees, while keeping President Trump’s January hiring freeze in place. The proposed attrition of up to 4,000 employees was detailed in a March budget plan and would add to the already 350 jobs that have gone unfilled since the hiring freeze.

Americans have time and time again shown strong support for regulations that protect U.S. ecosystems and the clean water and air we all rely on, but the Trump administration since its start has shown that the interests of its constituents pale in comparison to the will of big business. Already fossil fuel lobbyists and climate change deniers have infiltrated so many rungs of the political system at Trump’s behest and career EPA employees who have spent years fighting for environmental protection have provided a crucial bulwark against the pollution of both America’s lands and democracy. The loss of these employees would cut deep into this country’s ability to ensure the health and safety of U.S. ecosystems and residents, and it’s up to us to stop it. Sign this petition to demand the buyouts be denied to prevent the erosion of environmental law and stop the Trump administration’s assault on our lands and livelihoods.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Director Mulvaney,

The Office of Management and Budget under your direction has encouraged agencies to offer employee buyouts and instructed federal agencies to submit plans to reduce staff numbers, and it appears that the EPA is following your orders. A recent budget revealed that the agency is planning to cut as many as 4,000 employees, an expensive proposition that would severely limit the federal government’s ability to enforce environmental protection and ensure the safety of the American people.

Environmental regulations are supported by the vast majority of Americans, Republicans and Democrats alike, and the EPA is already suffering from extremely low staff numbers. Reducing their numbers further would make enforcement of existing regulations incredibly difficult, which may make the president and his corporate friends happy, but would certainly enrage many Americans in the process. We have already seen a strong backlash against the polluted future that the Trump administration is fighting to ensure, and I urge you to deny the buyout funding requests to preserve the clean air and water the American people demand.

Sincerely,
