Punish Reporters Who Laughed At Sexual Assault

Target: Peter Hutton, CEO of Eurosport

Goal: Reprimand reporters who laughed at on-air sexual assault.

Reporters for Eurosport actually laughed while one of their own was sexually assaulted live on-air. Reporter Maly Thomas was reportedly kissed several times and even grabbed around the neck by tennis player Maxime Hamou. Thomas’s fellow reporters only watched on and laughed.

There is nothing funny about sexual assault. Instead of using the opportunity and their platform to speak out, however, reporters for the network laughed and snickered.

Sexual assault of female reporters in the sports industry is an unfortunately familiar occurrence. Eurosport should reprimand its reporters who egged it on so that athletes, reporters, and others in these male-dominated industries understand that such behavior should not be tolerated.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Hutton,

Recently, your reporter Maly Thomas was allegedly sexually assaulted live on-air by tennis player Maxime Hamou, to the laughs and hoots of other Eurosport reporters. Hamou has rightfully been punished, but the gentlemen who egged on the behavior should also face discipline.

Women in the male-dominated sports and journalism industries have been the target of sexual assault for too long. Many reports go untold for the very reason we saw on live television — because such actions are simply taken as a joke. If Eurosport really wants to be seen as a company working to end sexual assault against women in the workplace, it should reprimand the reporters who thought Hamou’s actions were funny.

Sincerely,

Punish Reporters Markedly for Laughing at the Disgraceful On-Air Sexual Assault of Maly Thomas–NOW!!!

  2. The reporters’ responses of laughter to the sexual assault of this woman are unacceptable and inexcusable. At the same time, their responses show, sadly still in this “modern” age, how deeply ingrained in society is the acceptance of male dominance and male abuse of women. A lot of work still needs to be done to root out misogynistic thinking.

  3. sexual assault is not one bit funny! fire the reporter!

rape is no joke! unwanted touch is no joke!
