Demand Judge Strengthen Sentence for Rapist

Target: Annmarie Padilla, District Attorney of Del Norte, California

Goal: Demand judge give convicted rapist a harsher sentence or step down from the bench.

California judge William H. Follett has given a convicted rapist a joke of a punishment: only eight months in jail. Nolan Bruder confessed to drugging his 16-year-old sister with “dabs” of marijuana in order to convince her to have sex with him, and according to probation officers showed no remorse for his actions during the trial. Judge Follett believes that the stigma of being a convicted rapist is punishment enough and will prevent Bruder from repeating his actions.

This is completely unacceptable. There have been far too many recent cases of judges letting rapists off with a slap on the wrist, continuing the normalization of rape culture. While no punishment can erase the crimes committed or the trauma suffered by the victims, rape is a very serious and unforgivable crime. It is not fair to the victims or to society for these people to get off with such light sentences.

Judge Follett must not be allowed to remain on the bench if this is how he handles rape cases. By letting Bruder off with a slap on the wrist, he is compromising the safety of the victim; despite his claim that the stigma will correct Bruder’s behavior, it is all too possible that once free, Bruder will target his sister again. Sign this petition to demand Judge Follett either give Bruder a harsher sentence, or be removed from the bench entirely.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear District Attorney Padilla,

Judge William Follett’s sentence for convicted rapist Nolan Bruder is unacceptable. The man admitted to drugging and raping his underage sister, and showed no remorse for his actions, yet Judge Follett claims to believe that the stigma of being a rapist will correct his behavior. His letting this man off with a slap on the wrist is the latest in a string of judges who trivialize rape, ignoring the feelings of and the traumas suffered by the victims.

You must either demand Follett give Bruder a harsher sentence, the suggested six years in prison, or remove him from the bench. Follett’s decision is a dangerous one that normalizes rape culture, sends a message to victims that their safety is not important and a message to rapists that their behavior is perfectly acceptable. If Follett does not correct his actions and hand down a firmer punishment, he must not be allowed to remain on the bench. Issue this ultimatum to him as soon as possible. We must not allow any more rapists to be let off with a slap on the wrist.

Sincerely,

Demand that Judge William H. Follett either impose a harsher sentence than a MERE 18 MONTHS (WHICH IS LAUGHABLE!) on Rapist or step down from the Bench NOW!!!! This is Unacceptable!!!

  2. This outrageously short sentence undermines the seriousness of rape and shows a callous disregard for the victim, and for rape victims in general. It also will put a dangerous, unremorseful rapist back on the street in a short period of time. The rapist should receive the maximum sentence possible.

  3. Ages ago rape was rare because rapists were castrated.

    abolish rape culture now!
