Justice for Allegedly Starved and Neglected Pet Store Animals

Target: Pat Melton, Franklin County Sheriff

Goal: Charge store owners who allegedly neglected dozens of animals at Backwoods Pets.

A pet store in Kentucky was shut down and approximately 20 animals were confiscated from them due to apparent neglect. A customer reported the store to law enforcement after noticing the animals inside didn’t have food or water. Most of the animals were pocket pets, including rats, guinea pigs, mice, hamsters, and gerbils. Some were mislabeled, implying a general lack of knowledge when it comes to small pets. Pet stores are entrusted with the safety of hundreds of animals at any given time, and the neglect in this case is appalling.

The local humane society is now overwhelmed with the amount of new arrivals, though most luckily seem to be healthy despite their abysmal living conditions. Witnesses even say they saw a dead rodent being eaten by the remaining animals in its enclosure. Cannibalism among adult rodents is not normal, and usually is a result of starvation. The animals are not available for adoption since they are part of an active police investigation. Sign this petition to punish those responsible for the horrible abuse of hundreds of defenseless animals.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Melton,

The recent bust of Backwoods Pets in Franklin County is alarming to say the least. The fact that so many animals apparently had to endure gruesome neglect is unfortunate, but now that they are safe the important thing is getting justice for the innocent creatures forced to go through immense suffering at the hands of their caretakers. According to reports, many of the animals had no food or water, and some of them even had to resort to cannibalism just to survive. The local humane society is now overwhelmed with the new addition of hundreds of small animals, something no one could really be prepared for, especially not a shelter that usually houses only dogs and cats.

Officers reported an odor of ammonia, likely coming from accumulated animal waste. An individual living nearby stated that they hadn’t seen anybody enter or leave the store in about a week. Please make sure the people allegedly responsible for neglecting hundreds of animals are punished to the fullest extent of the law. This is criminal neglect and falls under Kentucky’s legal designation of cruelty to animals in the second degree.

Sincerely,
