Protect Public Health From Harmful Car Exhaust

Target: Scott Pruitt, Administrator of the EPA

Goal: Do not eliminate mandatory E-Checks for older cars in seven Ohio counties.

Automobile exhaust is one of the biggest contributors to air pollution, and it’s one that almost everyone plays a part in. We should all play our part in reducing pollution, especially those of us who live in densely populated cities. Cars release more than 300 million tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every single year, leading directly to global warming. E-checks were created to ensure that vehicles all conformed to specific regulations regarding emissions and to keep air quality at acceptable levels.

Ohio has several large cities, and between Columbus, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Toledo and Akron, Ohio is one of the top ten most populated states in the country. About one in twelve people suffers from asthma, and air quality is also of particular importance to the elderly and young children. Older cars were manufactured before all of the risks of air pollution were known, so they don’t always meet our modern environmental standards. Sign this petition to ensure that emissions checks will still be required for older cars in seven Ohio counties.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Pruitt,

In the year 2013, vehicle emissions accounted for over half of the carbon monoxide polluting the air. When inhaled it can stop oxygen from getting to the person’s brain, and is especially dangerous for infants and people suffering from chronic illnesses. Nitrogen oxides can make one more susceptible to serious respiratory infections, and particulate matter is what gives smog its color and is the most dangerous for asthmatics. There are also many other pollutants that come from our vehicles and that we need to protect ourselves from.

There are over 6 million cars registered in Ohio, and even though not all of them are in counties requiring E-checks, enough are that eliminating the requirements would have a significant impact on Ohio’s air quality. E-checks can also help people find out what exactly is wrong with their car if it’s not working properly, so they know what to get fixed. The American Lung Association supports keeping E-checks. This is a matter of public health, not something frivolous to cut from the budget. Please do not allow E-checks to be eliminated. We need to keep our air clean and the E-checks were judged to be the most cost-effective way of doing so.

Sincerely,
