Target: New Jersey Governor Chris Christie
Goal: To distribute condoms to students in public high school in order to promote safe sex.
Despite the time students spend in high school health classes, it is no secret that teenage pregnancy rates and STD rates are increasing. While parents and teachers should still encourage abstinence in teens, it is inevitable that many high school students are going to get curious and become sexually active. While teachers may not be able to ensure that their students will remain abstinent, they can ensure that, if and when these teens become sexually active, they have the proper protection.
Many schools are still strongly against the distribution of condoms due to the belief that this practice will encourage teens to have sex; however, teens are encouraged to become sexually active by the media, peers, and many other outlets already. If a teen decides to remain abstinent even with the influence of the media, their school providing condoms is not going to suddenly change their mind. Rather, it is going to provide a safe option for those teens who would become sexually active anyway.
Therefore, this petition aims to convince NJ legislators to distribute condoms in public high schools. Teens becoming sexually active is a completely normal part of adolescence, but if educators want to be oblivious to this fact, many teens will engage in unsafe sex. In order to lower teen pregnancy and STD rates, it is imperative that we begin to promote safe sex as early as high school.
Dear NJ legislators and NJ Governor Chris Christie,
It is extremely important that educators recognize that many teens are sexually active and thus, provide them the proper protection. Some schools fear that this will encourage sexual behaviors, but it will only keep safe those who are already sexually active.
Not only is the belief that distributing condoms promotes sex an outdated opinion, but it is a close-minded viewpoint that is leading to many students having unprotected sex. Instead of working against the students, it is important that teachers work with them in order to create a healthy and safe concept of sex.
I am urging you to abandon your concern on the matter and realize how important it is to promote safe sex to high school students through the distribution of condoms.
