Phillipines President: Apologize For Rape Joke

Target: Rodrigo Duterte, President of the Philippines

Goal: Demand Philippines president apologize for offensive statements.

Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has gone on record saying that he will happily take the blame and do jail time for soldiers who “do their jobs” by forcing their way into people’s homes and violating their safety and privacy. While he claimed his remarks were a joke, women’s organizations and human rights activists are not laughing. This is not the first time Duterte has made a rape joke; last year, he commented that a missionary raped and murdered in jail was “beautiful, and he should have been first in line.”

Duterte’s statement is not only the opposite of funny, it is dangerous. Joke or not, this man is essentially saying he will protect the rights of rapists and home invaders over the rights of the civilians and the women victimized by the soldiers’ attacks. He is encouraging the military to use rape as a tool of war; it is rape culture at work, and it is dangerous.

We cannot allow this man to get away with making such disgusting statements. Women all over the world deserve to have their rights and privacy protected, and not reduced to the punch line of a joke. Sign this petition to demand Duterte publicly apologize for his crass words.

Dear President Duterte,

Your recent declaration of protection to soldiers who would rape women to enforce martial law is not only cruel and disgusting, but extremely dangerous. Your assertion that it was just a joke makes it even worse, as rape is nothing to joke about. You have turned the rights and safety of women into a punch line, and are encouraging the military to use sexual violence as a tool of war.

You must publicly apologize for and retract your words as soon as possible. If they were indeed a joke, they were not funny, and if you were serious, you are wrong to tell soldiers it is okay to violate women for the sake of the law. Do not protect the rights of invaders and rapists over those of innocent people who are victimized by the attacks. Human rights must come before all else, especially in times like these.

  1. Angela Rabon says:

What a disgusting person! Duterte should have more respect for the citizens of his country. He is the leader of his country, and making derogatory remarks about anyone is disturbing and wrong.

  2. Carol Green says:

    Apologize? He should resign.

  3. He should be sodomized with a stick to see what is good in rape. Also he should start a strong sterilization program in his country as well as some in Asia, middle east and africa. The planet can’t have people growing like worms and this are the countries who have more population and than they export themselves most to Europe and USA which can’t have them and are going down with this parasites of immigrants and migrants. If there is a war like in Lybia stay and fight back like all others have done. They come to security and soldiers from Europe go to defend their country, this world is in serious trouble since some mental retards are in UE controling things around.
