Charge Bullies who Left Teen Blind in One Eye with Felonies

Target: Family Court officials

Goal: To charge the bullies who shouted anti-gay slurs while beating a fellow student blind with felony hate crimes.

Kardin Ulysse, a 14-year-old student at Roy H. Mann Junior High School, has dreams of one day becoming a doctor. But right now, he must grapple with the aftermath of a devastating school attack that left him blind in one eye. Two of his fellow students, both seventh graders, reportedly held him down earlier this June and beat him until he lost vision in one eye. They were both shouting anti-gay slurs while pummeling Ulysse’s face. Currently, the two are charged with misdemeanors. Tell the Family Court that these heartless bullies must be charged with felony hate crimes.

“My son is very upset. He says, ‘Daddy, am I ever going to be able to see again?’ ” his father told Daily News reporters in an article published on Monday, June 18, 2012.

Since the brutal beating, the boy has had two surgeries on his visionless right eye, according to the Daily News. The paper reported that one of the bullies held Ulysse down while the other mercilessly pummeled his face and upper body.

A Department of Education occurrence report found that during the unprovoked attack, the bullies called the boy a “pussy”, “transvestite”, and “gay”, among other homophobic epithets.

School officials broke up the fight, but not before possibly irreversible damage was done to the child’s right eye. The family plans to sue the Department of Education for $16 million for failing to properly protect their child. According to a DOE survey uncovered by the Daily News, 40 percent of Roy H. Mann students do not feel safe in school.

Because the attackers are minors, they were charged merely with misdemeanors in Family Court. However, this clear instance of anti-gay violence must be upgraded to a hate crime, which would mean that the two would be charged with felonies. By signing the petition below, you will demand justice for Ulysse.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Family Court officials,

The case against the bullies who attacked Kardin Ulysse, a victim of homophobia and extreme bullying, must be taken very seriously. By charging his bullies with a misdemeanor, it sends the message that anti-gay slurs and near-fatal attacks will be met with little punishment. Ulysse must live with the aftermath of this attack for the rest of his life; his bullies should have to pay for their cruel and shameful actions.

The two heartless attackers in this case must be charged with felony hate crimes. The Department of Education documented these students calling the defenseless boy “gay”, a “transvestite”, and a “pussy”. Clearly, this evidence, along with testimony by Ulysse, indicates the beating was indeed a hate crime.

It is imperative that these bullies are brought to justice for their crimes. Please commit to taking action immediately.

Sincerely,

The scum that did this to Kardin must not get away with their crime. What kind of parents do the scum have? Where do they learn to hate another human being? I hope that Kardin’s parents successfully sue so that their son gets the best help available to recover from his ordeal, and goes on to achieve his dreams.
