Stop Civilian Deaths in the Fight Against ISIS

Target: Jim Mattis, U.S. Secretary of Defense

Goal: Stop the killing of innocent civilians in the fight against ISIS.

In the months since he took office, President Trump has kept promises to ramp up efforts to fight ISIS, increasing U.S.-led bombings by 50 percent and leading to the significant loss of ISIS territory. However, in the process, hundreds of civilians, including children, have been lost in the crossfire, with 3,681 civilians killed since the formation of the anti-ISIS coalition in September 2014.

Reliant on bombings to avoid the loss of American troops on the ground, the U.S. backed warfare has become far less precise, and the anti-ISIS coalition is seemingly accepting of civilian losses in the name of beating ISIS. The Pentagon is charged with ensuring that no civilians are in or near targeted structures, but has yet to release a statement explaining why 105 civilians were killed in a bombing targeting two ISIS snipers, or why 106 civilians, including 42 children, were killed during a recent two-day bombing in Syria.

This senseless violence against innocent people must be stopped. Sign this petition to demand the Department of Defense respond to the alleged civilian deaths and explain how it plans to end these heinous casualties of war.

Dear Secretary Mattis,

As President Trump has sought to increase efforts to fight ISIS in the Middle East, U.S.-led bombings in the region have risen, and with them the loss of innocent civilians. Two recent events have proven some of the most alarming, in which an attack targeting two snipers in Iraq led to the deaths of 105 civilians and another in Syria resulted in 106 civilian deaths, including 42 children. The Department of Defense has yet to issue a statement explaining why this happened, despite the fact that it is charged with ensuring civilians are not killed during bombings.

I write today to ask that your department release a coherent explanation for these deaths and issue new policies to ensure the American people that it will not happen again. Only then can faith in your leadership and agency be restored as we seek peace for all in the Middle East.

  1. The number of civilian deaths has become quite alarming. Not acceptable or excusable.
