Tell the LA City Council to Ban ‘Open Carry’ Handguns

Petition Target: Los Angeles City Council

Going against the National Rifle Association (NRA) and other pro-guns groups, Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti has moved to ban “open carry” handguns within city limits.

Under current law, handgun owners are permitted to openly carry an unloaded weapon in a holster with ammunition carried next to the gun on the holster.

Under the law proposed by Garcetti, only authorized law enforcement personnel or holders of concealed weapons permits would be allowed to openly carry a handgun.

In describing the purpose behind the proposed law, Garcetti explained “No one needs a gun on their hip when walking down the street or going to the store. The open carry of a handgun can be intimidating and threaten public safety.”

Garcetti and the City Council plan to take up this issue in the coming weeks. Sign the petition below to show your support for banning open-carry handguns in Los Angeles!

Petition Text:

Dear Los Angeles City Council,

I strongly support the proposed legislation banning “open-carry” handguns within the City of Los Angeles. I agree with City Council President Eric Garcetti that this is a “common sense” decision and should be enacted.

In light of the high levels of gun violence in Los Angeles and the intimidation associated with open-carry handguns, I ask that you pass this legislation banning open-carry guns.
