Target: United States Congress
Goal: Provide public funding for candidates who raise adequate support from members of their community.
A new bill presented to Congress would change the way federal candidates run for office. The bill, called the Fair Elections Now Act, would give funding to qualified candidates so these candidates may run for office without relying on large contributions from lobbyists. Candidates would be able to stop focusing on fundraising and instead focus on doing what is best for the people in their communities.
Qualifying candidates would first seek contributions from people in their own community. Each candidate would need to receive a certain number of small contributions from their supporters. The money raised by these small contributions would be matched five times by the Fair Elections funds. Participating candidates would also receive lower broadcasting rates in order to run campaign advertisements. This plan will allow candidates who focus on people instead of corporations to compete with the lobbyist-funded candidates.
Candidates often spend far too much time fundraising instead of focusing on people and communities. Assistant Senate Majority Leader Dick Durbin said, ‘Without a fundamental reform of the way we finance campaigns, we cannot bring real reform to Capitol Hill.’ Fair Elections Now will bring that reform to campaign finances. Every candidate, no matter their political party, will have an equal chance at being elected. This will help all candidates spend their time listening to the needs of voters instead of listening to the demands of lobbyists. Tell Congress to advance this crucial legislation and reform campaign financing.
Dear United States Congress:
A bill that has been presented to you would fundamentally change how campaigns are financed. The Fair Elections Now Act would provide campaign funds for any qualifying candidate who has raised money and support from people in their own communities. This will allow any candidate to have a fair chance of campaigning against candidates funded by lobbyists.
I ask you to pass the Fair Elections Now Act. Without the pressure to fundraise and make promises in exchange for donations, candidates will be able to truly focus on what the voters want. This will lead to real reform in other areas, as elected candidates can keep their promises to people instead of funders.
