Ensure Essential Health Care for Women in Virginia

protect women's health

Target: Virginia Board of Health

Goal: Ensure that women’s health care centers can continue to provide safe, accessible and essential care.

Recently, the Virginia Board of Health voted to protect safe, legal first-trimester abortion care by amending a provision in the proposed permanent regulations that will set new rules for women’s health centers in the state. The provision is a significant step forward for women’s health, but there is still a lot to be amended for the proposed permanent regulations to ensure effective care. Urge the Virginia Board of Health to continue prioritizing women’s health needs when they vote at their next meeting.

In January, a burdensome set of new rules for women’s health centers went into effect. Despite wide criticism, public concern and recommendations of medical professionals, the Virginia Board of Health drafted virtually identical proposed permanent regulations designed to limit access to safe, legal abortion care . These extreme proposed regulations go further than any other existing regulations in other states, creating barriers for women seeking all kinds of reproductive health care.

On June 15th, the Virginia Board of Health voted to amend a key provision of the proposed permanent regulations, choosing to “grandfather in” existing women’s health care centers that provide safe, legal first-trimester abortion care. This amendment, while important, only reflects a change in the draft of the permanent regulations. Additionally, the Board has yet to vote to amend a provision that threatens patient and provider confidentiality and safety. To truly protect women’s health, we must put pressure on the Board to continue to vote in favor of women’s real needs.

Sign the petition below to urge the Virginia Board of Health to prioritize women’s wellbeing over politics by ensuring that women’s health care centers can continue to provide safe, accessible, essential health care.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Board of Health Member,

First of all, I would like to thank you for amending the proposed permanent regulations for women’s health centers on June 15, 2012. The amendments keep with the recommendations of medical experts, so I applaud you for supporting regulations that put women’s well-being before politics.

I am well aware, however, that this amendment, while important, only reflects a change in the draft of the permanent regulations. Additionally, the Board has yet to vote to amend a provision that threatens patient and provider confidentiality and safety. To truly protect women’s health, the Board must continue to vote in favor of women’s real needs.

I would like to take the time to remind you that the Attorney General’s Office can inform the Board’s actions but cannot dictate it. Since the advice given by the Office is motivated by a political agenda as medical professionals have made clear, the Board should refuse to take that advice into consideration. Instead, please listen to public concerns and recommendations of medical professionals to make a responsible decision regarding the proposed permanent regulations.

I call on you to to prioritize women’s well-being over politics by ensuring that women’s health care centers can continue to provide safe, accessible, essential health care. I urge you to continue to vote in favor of regulations based solely on sound science and women’s needs.

Sincerely,
