Target: Bristol Palin
Goal: Demand an apology from Bristol Palin for inappropriate anti-homosexual accusations on her reality series.
Bristol Palin, daughter of former Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin, is starring in a reality show on Lifetime. The show, ‘Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp’ will chronicle her life as a young single mother to son Tripp. During taping for the show in Los Angeles Bristol was filmed at Saddle Ranch, a western themed bar, where she engaged in a heated confrontation with another patron. Stephen Hanks began yelling at Palin as she rode the mechanical bull in the establishment. He made hurtful comments about her mother and the father of her child. Bristol responded by asking him if he didn’t like her mother because he is a ‘homosexual’. Hanks is now suing Lifetime for defamation of character, saying he never signed a release to appear on the show. There is no dispute that the comments made by Hanks about Bristol’s family were mean and hurtful. Bristol however, was not only rude to Hanks in her response, but rude to an entire community by negatively referencing homosexuals.
Bristol Palin has become a public figure due to her mother’s political career but also by choice. This will be the third reality show she has participated in. The show is supposed to reveal Bristol as a struggling single mother who’s family and values are her number one priority in raising her son. Insinuating that an entire portion of the population, homosexuals in this case, would make the comments Hanks did about her mother is a poor example for her son, derogatory, ignorant, and hateful to an entire group of society. While Hank’s comments were uncalled for, Bristol needs to take responsibility that she is a public figure and sensor her responses. For someone who has expressed an interest in running for office in the future this is an excellent opportunity for Bristol to admit her comments were wrong and make a public apology.
Bristol Palin is a public figure and example for young women across the nation. Demand that she apologize for negative comments about the homosexual community on her reality show.
Dear Ms. Palin
During the taping of your reality show in Los Angeles you engaged in a heated confrontation with a patron at Saddle Ranch bar. The comments made by Stephen Hanks about your family were extremely mean and hurtful. However, your response was equally inappropriate. By asking Mr. Hanks if he said what he said about Sarah Palin because he is a ‘homosexual’ you are assuming that an entire group of society feels a certain way. Undoubtedly Mr. Hank’s comments were rude and uncalled for; however, yours were rude to an entire community and should be apologized for.
‘Bristol Palin: Life’s a Tripp’ will chronicle your life as a young single mother raising your son. Surely you want to be a good example to Tripp as well as to other young women who may be in a similar situation. Your comments referencing homosexuals were not only a poor example for your son, but also derogatory, ignorant, and hateful to an entire group of society. This is an excellent opportunity to admit your comments were inappropriate and make a public apology.
Please take this opportunity to be a positive role model and apologize for negative comments made about the homosexual community on your reality show.
