Do Not Give Federal Funding to Institutions That Discriminate Against LGBTQ Students

Target: Betsy DeVos, Secretary of Education

Goal: Do not allow schools that shamelessly discriminate against the LGBTQ community to receive federal funding.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos said that states should decide whether schools are able to discriminate against LGBTQ students, implying that she would not step in to prevent it even if those schools are funded using federal dollars. During a House Appropriations subcommittee hearing, Democratic Representative Katherine Clark pressed DeVos about whether there was any situation in which she would stand up for students who are being discriminated against for any reason. DeVos’s response was to continue defending the flexibility of states to make their own rules, disregarding the harm and injustice to students.

Rep. Clark’s question was in regard to a particular private school in Indiana that receives state voucher money, but that denies admission to students if they live in a household with “homosexual or bisexual activity” or someone “practicing alternate gender identity.” DeVos’s new budget plan would include a huge increase toward things like vouchers for private schools, but made it clear that if a school like this one applied for federal vouchers and was approved by the state, she would not prevent this institutionalized discrimination. Demand that Secretary DeVos protect our students’ human rights and not use tax dollars to fund schools that so blatantly discriminate.

Dear Secretary DeVos,

It is unacceptable to allow taxpayer dollars to fund schools that discriminate against certain students based on their or their family members’ sexual orientation or gender identity. To refuse to admit students to a school because of these things is a blatant violation of their rights.

As Education Secretary, you have a responsibility to all of the students in America. Regardless of the state’s flexibility to determine its own rules and allocate the federal funding it receives, it is un-American to condone — and further, to actively fund — this kind of inequality and discrimination. I urge you not to allow schools that receive federal funding to discriminate against the LGBTQ community.

DeVils, read the Constitution! Equal rights applies to ALL, separation of church and state. I judge a person’s worth by their heart, not their color, religion, or sexual preference. Your heart is sadly lacking.

stop discrimination against lgbtq+ now! nobody can judge against gender identity and love attraction.
