Trump: Apologize for Praising Dangerous Philippine Leader

Target: Donald Trump, President of the United States

Goal: Apologize for praising Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who has committed possible human rights violations in his war on drugs.

A transcript was recently released from an April phone call between Donald Trump and Rodrigo Duterte, the president of the Philippines. International human rights groups have taken notice of Duterte, with at least one calling for a criminal investigation of possible human rights violations in the government’s attempt to address a national drug problem.

President Trump told Duterte, “I just wanted to congratulate you because I am hearing of the unbelievable job on the drug problem. Many countries have the problem, we have a problem, but what a great job you are doing and I just wanted to call and tell you that.” One of Duterte’s campaign promises was to eradicate the drug problem in the Philippines, but since taking office, he has encouraged citizens to shoot and kill drug dealers. Thousands of citizens have been killed without legal trials.

In the past, Duterte has called Barack Obama a “son of a whore” and compared himself to Adolf Hitler, implying that the slaughter of his own citizens is something he’s comfortable with. It is inexcusable that a U.S. president has praised a leader who is openly encouraging the murder of his own citizens. Add your name to the petition below to demand that Trump apologize for these comments.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. President,

In April, you spoke with Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, and the transcript from the call has now revealed that you praised his approach to the drug problem in his country. While Duterte has cracked down on the Philippine drug problem since assuming power, he has done so in such a violent way that he is suspected of having committed human rights offenses.

Thousands of Philippine citizens have been killed at the hands of police since Duterte took over, and he has encouraged armed citizens to murder drug dealers on sight. Your praise of this violence is an indication of how little you understand international diplomacy and governmental overreach. It is shameful that you have congratulated a foreign leader on sanctioning the murder of his people.

I demand that you apologize for these comments, and that in the future, you work against the kinds of human rights violations being committed by Duterte and other foreign leaders.

Sincerely,
