Don’t Send Refugee Families Back to Devastated Homeland

Target: John F. Kelly, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security

Goal: Do not deport thousands of Haitians back to their decimated country.

Tens of thousands of Haitians who have sought refuge in America following the deadly 2010 earthquake in their country have been granted an extended stay in the U.S. for six months. However, mass deportations may quickly follow if these families do not find an alternative place to live once that time is up.

Over 55,000 Haitians have made their homes in the U.S. following the earthquake and cholera epidemic, the effects of which are still being felt around the small and impoverished nation. Here these refugees have found jobs, homes, and healthcare. They have raised their families here and have even given birth to American children. To force them to return to a country that is still reeling from one of the worst natural disasters in world history would rob from them the lives they have succeeded in rebuilding.

Families who have made their lives here, who were welcomed with opened arms, and who have established roots, should not be torn from their homes. Sign the petition and demand that the stay for these Haitian refugees be extended permanently.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Secretary Kelly,

While an extended stay has been granted for six months to Haitian refugees who have fled to the United States after a devastating and deadly earthquake in their home nation, they may soon be deported back to their country after this time period is up. Their country, however, is still reeling from the effects of the quake, as well as a deadly cholera epidemic.

These refugees have built homes, found jobs, and raised families here. After over seven years, these refugees are Americans, in spirit if not yet legally. They were welcomed with opened arms and should not be ripped from the lives they have built here and return to a nation that is still suffering from death and disaster.

Sincerely,
