Oppose Trump’s Cuts To Medical and Scientific Research

Target: Mitch McConnell, Senate Majority Leader

Goal: Oppose funding cuts to scientific and medical research in Donald Trump’s 2018 budget request.

Donald Trump recently delivered his 2018 budget request to Congress. The request is titled “A New Foundation for American Greatness” and includes significant spending cuts in medical and scientific research, including disease prevention. The suggested cuts have been met with significant criticism from the scientific community.

Under this proposed budget, the National Institutes of Health would face a budget cut of more than $5 billion. The National Cancer Institute would lose $1 billion compared to its 2017 funding. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases would lose $838 million, and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute would lose $575 million. In addition, the National Science Foundation would lose $766 million, which is roughly 11 percent of its budget. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention would also see cuts.

These institutions conduct incredibly important research that contribute to the health and safety of American citizens. The Trump administration has consistently shown a disregard for science and health issues, particularly with its attack on the Environmental Protection Agency and its attempt to deny healthcare access to low-income Americans. Add your name to the petition below to demand that scientific and medical research be protected and properly funded.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator McConnell,

Donald Trump recently delivered his 2018 budget request to Congress, and the proposed budget includes significant cuts to organizations that conduct important medical and scientific research, including the National Cancer Institute, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and the National Science Foundation.

The Trump administration has made clear in just a few short months that scientific and medical advancements are not considered vital issues in this White House. However, the research these institutes conduct is incredibly important for improving the health of American citizens and making scientific strides that will protect the planet. Furthermore, it is unlikely that cancer or climate change research is at the root of the federal government’s overspending problem, and the president should be aware that the benefits of this research are more important than the cost.

I strongly urge you to oppose these spending cuts in the 2018 budget request. As the Senate Majority Leader, you are an important voice in Congress, and I ask that you use your position and your work in the Senate to avoid cutting funding to these important institutions.

Sincerely,
