Do Not Eliminate Freedom of the Press

Target: Reince Priebus, White House Chief of Staff

Goal: Do not eliminate the First Amendment and rob the nation’s press of its freedoms.

The Trump Administration has vocally insinuated that it may one day soon change libel laws and seriously restrict press freedoms. White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus has said that President Trump is considering punishing journalists who write “defamatory statements” about him.

Currently, the First Amendment protects journalists from libel suits, but this can change if the White House decides to alter how exactly libel is defined. On a similar note, Priebus also voiced the possibility that the government may one day punish flag burners, in another clear violation of the First Amendment.

Eliminating the protections of the First Amendment is a disturbing proposition, especially when it comes to libel laws. The Trump Administration, with its proclivity to call any news it doesn’t agree with “fake news,” can very easily change the law so that even truths become libel. This is the first move taken by many authoritarian regimes. Sign the petition and demand that the Trump Administration defend our Constitution, not tear it apart.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Priebus,

You have recently voiced the opinion that the White House may soon look at amending libel laws, making it easier for journalists to be sued for publishing what President Trump may call “defamatory statements.” To do this would be to shred the First Amendment to pieces, allowing President Trump to call anything he disagrees with “libel.”

The First Amendment protects journalists. It allows them to report the truth and does not hold them responsible to those in power. The world’s most brutal authoritarian regimes have followed this path you now propose. You, President Trump, and others in the administration swore to protect our Constitution. I demand that is what you do by leaving libel laws alone and the First Amendment intact.

Sincerely,
