Lift the North Carolina Ban on Second-Parent Adoption for Same-Sex Couples

Target: North Carolina Senate

Goal: Overturn the North Carolina ban on second-parent adoption for same-sex couples.

Since 2010, the state of North Carolina has a ban on second parent adoption by same-sex couples. This means that any child either adopted by or born to a same-sex couple is at risk. These children are faced every day with the possibility that they will be ripped away from their families if something should happen to their legal parent, or deprived of health insurance, public health, veterans’, disability, and social security benefits. If the relationship should dissolve, the non-legal parent would have no say in child custody or have any legal standing.

Every child deserves a loving, secure home, and North Carolina’s ban on second parent adoption means that many children cannot have that home. Even if someone has been raising a child and acting as his parent for years, they may not be able to legally become that child’s parent. Besides the legal implications, children face the knowledge that they are unable to legally acknowledge their parents who provide them security and safety.

By signing the petition below, you are asking the state of North Carolina to turn over the ban on second-parent adoption, and to join with several other states in allowing unmarried, non-biological parents of a child to legally formalize their parental rights. Support every child’s right to a happy, loving home.

Dear North Carolina Senate,

By banning second parent adoption by same-sex parents, you are not only depriving children of loving, secure homes, you are also depriving them of legal benefits such as health insurance, public health, veterans’, disability, and social security benefits. Not only that, but if one of the parents is the legal parent of a child and something happens to them or the relationship dissolves, the non-legal parent will have no legal standing over what happens to the child, even if they have been raising that child for years.

It has been proven that children raised by same-sex parents are no different than children raised by opposite sex parents. There are so many children in North Carolina who need loving homes, but are unable to go to them because of North Carolina’s ban on second-parent adoption.
I am asking you to please overturn the ban on second-parent adoption. Allow same-sex parents to legally adopt children, and give every child in North Carolina a right to a secure, loving home.
