Oppose Budgetary Assault on Environmental Programs

Target: Diane Black, Chairwoman, United States House of Representatives Budget Committee

Goal: Block approval of deep cuts to environmental agencies contained within the 2018 budget proposal.

The Trump Administration has proposed a colossal $1.7 trillion reduction in overall government spending for the 2018 fiscal year. A significant portion of these cuts would directly impact environmental and climate science programs.

Several vital programs within the Environmental Protection Agency would be threatened by a 31 percent budget reduction. The proposed cut completely eliminates support for national estuaries, coastal flood mitigation, and monitoring of industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Publicly funded research into renewable energy is also likely to be significantly reduced through a 70 percent cut to the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. This includes the popular EnergyStar efficiency rating program.

A growing number of Republican lawmakers are voicing their opposition the proposed budget. Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska spoke out against overall funding cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency and elimination of EnergyStar. Former presidential candidate and current Senator Lindsay Graham classified the budget proposal as “dead on arrival.”

It is critical that Congress receives a clear message of opposition from its constituents regarding the proposed budget. Please sign the below petition calling on lawmakers to preserve funding for environmental and climate science programs.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Representative Black,

I am writing to urge your opposition to the Trump Administration’s budget proposal for fiscal year 2018. It represents an all-out assault on environmental and climate science programs. This includes the elimination of support for vital climate change mitigation efforts, which directly benefit states along the gulf coast.

Several of your Republican colleagues, including Senators Murkowski and Graham, have already rejected the funding reductions on principle. Please join them and the vast majority of Democrats in sending a clear bipartisan message that this proposal will not be given serious consideration in its current form.

Sincerely,

[Your Name Here]

please stop cutting budgets on enviroment protection now!

  2. This budget if approved would be absolutely devastating to the environment and wildlife in America. It’s atrocious that such a budget is even being considered.
