Don’t Allow Adoption Agencies to Discriminate Against Non-Christian Parents

Target: Greg Abbott, Texas Governor

Goal: Do not sign “religious refusal” adoption measure into law.

The Texas Senate has passed a bill that lets public adoption and foster care agencies refuse to place children with certain parents based on religious objections. Supporters consider this an issue of religious freedom, but the measure allows these agencies to refuse to grant adoptions to non-Christian people, single parents, gay couples or any number of other groups.

The bill, known as the “Freedom to Serve Children Act,” is one of several religious freedom-themed measures that have been pushed in recent years in conservative states. Under the guise of protecting religious freedom (by which lawmakers tend to mean only Christian freedom), these measures allow a legal loophole for open discrimination against a number of minority groups.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has to sign the bill before it becomes law. If he does so, Texas will join South Dakota as the only states that allow public adoption agencies to reject potential parents for religious reasons. Sign the petition below to demand that Governor Abbott not sign this discriminatory bill into law.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Abbott,

The Texas State Legislature recently passed a bill that has been marketed as a religious freedom measure, but it is in fact a legal loophole for allowing state-funded adoption and foster care agencies to discriminate against potential parents on the basis of sexual orientation, marital status or religious affiliation.

Much like the controversial “bathroom bill” that was passed last year in North Carolina, and recently partially repealed, this measure and others like it are designed to allow discrimination in states with high populations of conservative, white, Christian citizens. Each time one of these “religious freedom” measures is passed, it only serves to allow those who discriminate against minorities to do so more openly and without fear of consequence. Furthermore, adoption and foster care agencies should be focused on finding homes for children, not finding ways to reject the people who want to provide those homes.

I strongly urge you not to sign this bill into law. Only one state currently has a law like this in place, and the religious freedom of Christians is by no means under attack in this country. More anti-discriminatory legislation is what we need in this political environment, and this law would only promote discrimination in Texas.

Sincerely,
