Justice for Inmate Allegedly Shot and Killed by Officer During Medical Treatment

Target: Chuck E. Atkins, Clark County Sheriff

Goal: Make sure the victim of a recent act of alleged police brutality receives the justice he deserves.

Police brutality has been a growing problem the last few years, and it has received a lot of media coverage leading to minority citizens fearing for their lives. In Vancouver, Washington, a man was arrested for violating parole. He was a non-violent offender and 66 years old. He began to complain of medical problems and was admitted to a local hospital with two armed deputies watching over him. This seems a bit excessive for an elderly, non-violent offender in ill health. Officers say he “took action” during treatment and one of them subsequently shot him in the torso.

Already being in the hospital, the inmate was able to receive emergency medical care, but he didn’t survive his injuries. It’s unclear what action he took exactly, but being combative should not carry a death sentence. Law enforcement cannot do their jobs if the citizens don’t trust them, but it’s becoming more and more difficult to trust officers when the news is full of unarmed people gunned down by them. Sign this petition to ensure that this man’s death was not in vain.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Mr. Atkins,

An inmate under your jurisdiction was reportedly fatally wounded by a deputy. He was a senior citizen, and hospitalized at the time. The officer stated that the man “took action,” but it’s unclear what exactly that means. Even if he was violent, he was presumably unarmed and outnumbered two to one by deputies with firearms. He could have easily been non-lethally subdued. Hospitals have security in addition to the two guards stationed with him, and if shooting was somehow legitimately the only method available to them, they could have shot him in the leg rather than the torso, where wounds are more likely to be fatal.

Police officers cannot have this attitude of “shoot first, ask questions later,” and the only way to put an end to it is to punish those who commit these acts of brutality. These situations will only become more frequent if members of law enforcement keep consistently seeing their peers getting away with overly aggressive methods. Even prison inmates have a right to life, and need to be treated like human beings. Please make sure this man gets the justice he deserves.

Sincerely,

  1. Kathryn Irby says:

Justice for Inmate who was allegedly Shot and Killed by Cop During MEDICAL TREATMENT, NO LESS–NOW!!!! Cops Have Continued to Literally Get Away with Murder TOO MANY TIMES, AND SUCH MUST STOP!!!!

  2. All the information needs to come out about this. Why are the cops being so vague?? They said the man “took action”. WTF does that mean? Sounds pretty questionable to me.
This killing should be thoroughly investigated by impartial, independent investigators, in order to get to the truth of the matter.
