Stop Breeding Hybrids of Big Cats Doomed to a Short and Painful Life

Target: Sonny Perdue, Secretary of Agriculture

Goal: Ban the breeding of ligers and tigons, who usually have health problems.

Lions and tigers may be technically able to interbreed, but that doesn’t mean they should be forced to. The two species would never meet in the wild, so they’re only bred together in captivity. The effects on offspring vary based on which species is the mother and which is the father. For ligers, which have tigers for mothers and lion fathers, gigantism is a problem. Birth defects are not uncommon and their hearts can give out. Tigons, which come about from a female lion and a male tiger, suffer from neurological conditions.

Ligers are more common than tigons, but both often die prematurely. Ligers are difficult for the tiger mother to give birth to, leading to a high incidence of death during childbirth and then a high rate of cub death. There are other big cat hybrids, like leopards mixed with either lions or jaguars. The animals are bred for novelty and profit, since large crowds come from all over to see these genetic anomalies. Sign this petition to ban the interbreeding of big cats.

Dear Mr. Perdue,

Ligers and tigons are being bred in spite of the severe health problems they’re very likely to face. Tigons in particular rarely survive infancy, and ligers grow to such an enormous size that their hearts cannot keep up. Arthritis and cancer are also thought to be more common for ligers than either of their parents. Tigers have trouble giving birth to the lion-tiger hybrids, so it’s not uncommon for them to die during the birth. A C-section is often required for safety’s sake. There are a few examples of big cat hybrid species living long healthy lives, but by and large that’s not the case.

Ligers’ health problems are controversial but well documented. Their lifespans are known to be shorter than either of their parents, yet people will pay extra to see them. Sometimes zoos even sell the hybrids to private collectors, who may or may not have the ability to provide for the animals’ unique needs. Since the hybrids are not found in nature, they hold no conservation value, yet their health issues make them more expensive for zoos to care for. Please stop immoral handlers from the irresponsible interbreeding of large wild cat species.

Why don’t we make human – tiger hybrids?

  5. Dear Mr. Sunny Perdue, Secretary of

You may feel there are more important issues in your many job requirements, but all areas of animal welfare are major as they pertain to the well-being of all animals even the exotics.
Your understanding of the hybrid breeding of the big cats should be the immediate ban on it.
To allow anyone to intentionally breed these animals that can have nothing but a short and painful life at best in most likely an improper facility only adding to to its dreadful existence.
Again that life would be at best, most likely it would be sold to a canned hunt facility if not shortly after but a 1year or 2 of a horrible life in a road side zoo, then when the animal is starting to show more health issues the roadside zoo would then sell the hybred to a CANNED HUNT facility be killed by a hunter in a small fenced in area where the hunter can just walk up to the animal and shoot it in an area as not to ruin its tropy appearance, meaning even in death it will most likely suffer, because the hunter will shoot it in the large or torso part of its body where it will die slowly.
Does this sound like any kind of life for any animal, much less one that was forcibly brought to life and its mother will most likely died giving birth to it?
Your position as Secretary of Agriculture is to ensure that animals are not exploited for monetary purposes. Especially when the animal is doomed to a short life and horrible suffering during its lifetime.
Please use your position to immediately BAN the inter- breeding of BIG CATS to protect the new born from a life of pain and suffering and potentially protect the mother from dying during childbirth.

  7. Ban this sick and unnatural breeding practice, now!

  8. This practice is so horribly cruel and sadistic. It should be banned everywhere.
The people doing this are just monsters – psychopaths or something. To cause the creation of an animal who will suffer all his or her life – for profit, entertainment or any other reason is just monstrous. It’s not the animals who are monsters – it’s the people.

  9. Wendy Morrison says:

This interbreeding is NOT natural and must be stopped!- the only breeding that should be done is by professionals who are trying to save the real breeds BEFORE it is too late!

  13. Like Perdue actually cares. Firstly animals should not even be under the control of Agriculture. This is a joke and a farce. All animals continue to suffer under this idiot and others.
