Do Not Close Iowa Planned Parenthood Clinics

Target: Jack Whitver, President of the Iowa State Senate

Goal: Do not allow four of Iowa’s 12 Planned Parenthood clinics to close due to lack of funding.

Planned Parenthood recently announced that it will be closing four of its clinics in Iowa, a state that has only 12 Planned Parenthood locations to begin with. These closures are the result of the Iowa State Legislature cutting funding to the organization. Though federal funding for Planned Parenthood has been protected, states can decide to withhold funds, and the Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature made sure Planned Parenthood lost funding.

Suzanna be Baca, the CEO and president of Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, said in a statement, “This is a case of extreme Iowa politicians deciding they know what’s better for a woman’s health than the women actually seeking care, with devastating consequences.” These closures, due to take place in June, will limit access to important reproductive healthcare for women in Iowa, especially those who live in rural parts of the state.

Of the four clinics that will close, three of them provide abortions, and after the closures, there will only be five Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa where women can get abortions. State defunding of Planned Parenthood is largely motivated by anti-abortion sentiments, despite the fact that the Supreme Court ruled on the issue of abortion in 1973. Add your name to the petition below to demand that the Iowa legislature prevent these closures, which will threaten the health of women across the state.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Senator Whitver,

During the last session of the Iowa State Legislature, lawmakers in your state voted to cut funding to Planned Parenthood in favor of a more expensive option: creating a state-run alternative to the family planning organization that would not work with clinics that perform abortions or make abortion referrals.

As a result of this attack on a woman’s right to choose, four of the 12 Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa will close in June, cutting off access to important reproductive healthcare for women in your state. The women most harshly affected by these closures will be those who live in rural areas of Iowa.

As you’re well aware, the 1973 Roe v. Wade verdict by the United States Supreme Court protects a woman’s right to choose to undergo an abortion procedure. State legislation that makes it more difficult for women to access reproductive healthcare is an attack on women’s bodily autonomy. I strongly urge you to do anything you can in your work in the Iowa State Senate to prevent these four clinics from closing. Planned Parenthood provides reproductive healthcare that many of the women in your state are unable to access otherwise.

Sincerely,

  1. Not signing this petition.
Abortion is rarely ever an issue of health care. Selling abortion as “health care” is a clever tactic used by Planned Parenthood.
Abortion is a murder business, disguised as health care. There is nothing healthy about brutally torturing and murdering an innocent baby inside his or her mother’s womb.
If anyone currently believes abortion is about health care, please do your own research. Find out what abortion really is. What happens to the baby? Watch/read testimonies of former abortion doctors and workers. Educate yourself please.

  2. Paulette Mirfield says:

How are these people different from the Taliban? Both want you to live by their rules- your views be damned! At least that’s their view…until it affects them. How many children are in foster care? How many have they adopted? Special needs? They don’t seem to give a damn after it’s born though.

  3. Not signing as this petition is bullshit. PP not closing due to lack of funding but due to other providers offering more services to women at better prices and the clinics are located in the areas the women live. Stop lying about the closures and blaming President Trump.

  4. I will not ever sign something that promotes an evil practice that is nothing more than a form of murder. PP needs to be stopped. People need to stop believing the lies that PP is actually helping women with needed care; it is just a trick.

  5. I’m signing it because you have no right to dictate what I do with my body. If you don’t want an abortion, don’t have one. Hypocrites who refuse to provide care for a child after it is born but try to block an abortion before it is born. Unless you want to foster or adopt these children, who are so wanted by people who can’t have one on their own but they still aren’t adopted, your opinion doesn’t matter. Special needs, older children. Put your money where your mouth is. Let’s not forget child abuse perpetrated by parents who don’t know how to parent or who absolutely didn’t want to be a parent. What are you doing to reduce the numbers who are abused or murdered? For the majority, I’m going to say nothing.

  6. I previously told Margaret R McFarlin that I won’t have any more discussions with her because she has been (repeatedly) abusive toward me. There are many topics that people, including me, feel very strongly about, and often angry about, but that does not justify being repeatedly cruel and abusive to the person you are having a discussion with.
I am willing and able to discuss this and other issues with those who are not constantly abusive.

  7. I stand by my statements. Anybody can look at some of Margaret R McFarlin’s previous exchanges with myself and others to verify what I say. I refuse to be a punching bag for abusive people.
