Target: Head of Iranian Judiciary, Sadegh Larijani
Goal: Order prison officials to provide immediate medical attention for jailed blogger suffering from kidney disease.
A jailed blogger in Iran, facing fifteen years imprisonment, has been denied medical treatment for a debilitating kidney disease. The is in spite of the fact that the head Medical Examiner for the Iranian government, along with assisting physicians, have made it clear that Hossein Ronaghi Maleki needs a kidney operation immediately.
Nonetheless, prison officials have not approved any medical action and Maleki remains in his cell in increasingly deteriorating condition. Prison regulations demand care for prisoners suffering from health conditions and this case should be no different.
After trial in 2010, Maleki was sentenced to fifteen years in prison for articles he wrote on his blog, which were characterized as, “spreading propaganda against the system” and “insulting the Leader and the President.” Disregarding the apparent breach of the right to free expression, Maleki must not also be denied the right to medical assistance during incarceration.
According to Maleki’s parents, he is being forced to confess before any remedial attention will be given to him. If this course of action continues, Maleki may not even live to complete the remainder of his sentence. Fifteen years imprisonment for publishing articles of government criticism would instead become a verdict which condemned Maleki to death for his actions.
Iran must not be allowed to subjugate the system in this way, covertly punishing government critics beyond the punitive measures assigned to them in court. Sign this petition and demand that prison officials provide adequate medical attention immediately for Hossein Ronaghi Maleki, and continue to do so for the duration of his prison sentence.
Dear Sadegh Larijani,
I am writing with a sense of immediacy and deep concern for jailed blogger Hossein Ronaghi Maleki. He is currently suffering from kidney disease and needs urgent medical attention. However, prison officials have denied any such action, a stark breach of prison regulations.
To compound the issue further, your government’s Medical Examiner, along with other physicians, have made it clear that Maleki needs medical help immediately. And even worse, according to the parents of the imprisoned writer, Maleki is being forced to confess to the alleged crimes before he can receive any medical attention whatsoever.
These are the types of incidents that spark unrest and spur distrust of a seemingly dysfunctional government. Demonstrate to your citizens and to the world that this is not the case and that Iran will indeed pledge to protect individual rights and the value of human life. Provide blogger Hossein Ronaghi Maleki with the necessary medical attention immediately, and continue to do so until he has served his sentence in full.
