Don’t Censor and Regulate the Internet

Target: Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Goal: Do not allow the United Kingdom to force internet companies and social networks to censor and block content from users.

The internet has long been regarded as a hallmark of freedom of speech for people worldwide. As a basic tenet of democracy, freedom of speech allows for all manners of expression, including those which may be considered offensive or hateful. However, a recently revealed manifesto from the Conservative Party in the UK details plans to force private companies such as Facebook and Google to censor or block content from users which could be considered as pornographic, hateful or “other sources of harm”.

The broadly defined proposals in the manifesto appear to call for a complete government regulation on all internet activity, which would limit the content that users may publish online as well as threaten fines against companies which permit access to questionable content. Many are concerned this could severely restrict freedom of speech online, and could allow the government to censor any content it deems inappropriate on any grounds.

Clearly, no one is in favor of allowing minors to access pornography and most do not support the hateful words posted by various extremist groups. However, in using such a sweeping approach to control the internet, these measures will likely do far more harm than good. Sign below to demand that this gross violation of British citizens’ rights must not be allowed to occur.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Prime Minister May,

Recently, the Conservative Party revealed a manifesto detailing a plan of action for regulating technology and the internet. The proposals to force companies such as Facebook and Google to self-censor and block specific types of content from users is troubling. While many of us may disagree with offensive material found online, these are still areas of free speech which must be protected in a democratic system of government.

We, the undersigned, are concerned that the proposals mentioned in the manifesto go too far and are too broadly defined. The internet is a vital resource for free speech and expression, and must be protected as such. We demand that you not move forward with these plans to bring the internet under government control.

Sincerely,

I don’t feel comfortable signing this petition because, while I completely agree with free speech everywhere, free speech must have common sense boundaries – we CANNOT condone offensive and terrorist-related material posted online – this type of information must be edited and THROWN OUT, IMMEDIATELY!!! FREEDOM MUST ALSO INCLUDE DECENCY and RESPONSIBILITY!

  2. I totally support this petition.
This manifesto is all about GOVERNMENT CONTROL of the internet.
Putting the internet completely under the control of ANYONE – any government, organization or person – is a very foolish thing to do.
Governments are not gods. They don’t even really care about us. What they do, they do for their own selfish benefit. If anyone doesn’t get this by now – well, please do some research.
