Don’t Allow the National Rifle Association to Continue Insuring Murder

Target: The National Rifle Association

Goal: End the practice of providing insurance for those who wish to insulate themselves from legal costs stemming from self-defense killings.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) currently offers insurance plans to people who wish to insulate themselves from legal costs stemming from self-defense killings. The “NRA Endorsed Liability and Property Insurance” program, available only to current members of the NRA, has provisions in it that financially assist those engaged in self-defense cases.

This unusual form of insurance assists people who have injured or killed another person in self-defense by insuring them against the financial costs of a trial as well as the possible civil lawsuits stemming from the incident.

While it isn’t unlikely that some purchasers of this insurance will use it properly, it is a virtual certainty that many others will simply become more aggressive. Any situation where self-defense is necessary is extremely unlikely, unless the individual is looking for a fight. By insuring people against the consequences of self-defense, people will inevitably become more likely to seek out situations where self-defense is necessary. Put plainly, this type of insurance makes the idea of self-defense less legally dangerous to the individual and encourages getting into dangerous situations, rather than letting the authorities handle them.

This petition is directed at the NRA and is intended to convince them to stop offering the “NRA Endorsed Liability and Property Insurance Plan.” Promoting the safe ownership and use of guns is one thing; promoting vigilantism and reckless “self-defense” is quite another.

Dear National Rifle Association,

You currently endorse a personal liability insurance targeted to those who believe that they will injure or kill somebody in self-defense. While well-intentioned, this type of insurance benefits nobody and will lead to several severe social problems.

People who buy this insurance will be more likely to utilize self-defense, rather than leave dangerous situations to the proper authorities; this will expose your members to danger, and could lead to them being harmed needlessly.

As individuals who buy this insurance will likely use self-defense more readily than if they did not have this insurance, innocent people will likely be hurt. As seen in the Trayvon Martin shooting, an overzealous individual can mistakenly kill an innocent under the justification of “self-defense” if they have a lapse in judgement. By reducing the risk to the shooter, you are merely making it easier for them to act rashly and potentially kill innocents.

I, as well as everybody else to sign this petition, implore you to stop insuring potentially unnecessary vigilantism. Neither society, nor your members benefit from this insurance, and it is irresponsible to continue offering it.
