Target: South African Police Service
Goal: Demand immediate and thorough investigation of senseless hate crime in South Africa.
23-year-old Thapelo Makhutle was the target of a nightmarish hate crime on June 9, 2012. The victim was followed to his home in Kuruman, South Africa by two unidentified men and was later found deceased under a blanket. He had been decapitated and mutilated. Furthermore, his genitals had been severed and inserted into his mouth. The brutality of this crime would be frightful on any day; however, it is more disturbing because Makhutle’s murder happened purely because he was gay.
Makhutle, who also identified as transgender, was a member of a pro-gay rights activist group called Legbo Northern Cape. He was dedicated to speaking out against LGBT intolerance and educating LGBT youth about HIV and AIDS. The victim had recently participated in the Kimberley Out In Africa Gay and Lesbian Festival and had been crowed Miss Gay Kuruman.
So far, the two murderers have not been found, nor has a significant amount of effort been put into tracking them down. According to Legbo Northern Cape director Shaine Griqua, the police have refused to classify the murder as a hate crime. Sign the petition now to tell the police department that they must understand the seriousness of this manslaughter and bring justice to Makhutle’s memory.
Dear South African Police Service,
I write to you in regard to the brutal murder of 23-year-old Thapelo Makhutle in Kuruman. It has come to my attention that while his murder happened over five days ago, no suspect has been found or arrested. This causes me to believe that a proper investigation has not yet occurred.
It has also come to my attention that you are refusing to classify the murder as a hate crime. I would like to remind you that a hate crime is a crime motivated by a prejudice of sorts, and Makhutle’s murder happened because he was gay. It is not up to you to determine what a hate crime is. Instead, it is your job to get to the bottom of whatever felony you are faced with.
Because the criminals have not been found, I respectfully demand a thorough investigation of this senseless homicide. Furthermore, I am requesting for this felony to be classified as a hate crime in the hopes that people everywhere will understand the seriousness and brutality of the murder.
