Success: Chinese Food Festival to Ban Dog Meat

Target: Chen Wu, Governor of Yulin in China

Goal: Praise China for banning dog meat at annual cooking festival.

The controversial Yulin Dog Meat Festival is leaving the titular dish off the menu this year, thanks to the efforts of many protesters and petitions such as this one at ForceChange. Since 2001, thousands of dogs and cats have been slaughtered to provide meals at this festival. The animals were either strays or stolen pets.

This does not solve the problem of the pet meat trade overall; for example, cat meat is still available for the festival. However, the ban of dog meat and the steep fines charged to anyone who attempts to provide it are a big step in the right direction. The pet meat trade is a barbaric practice, and Andrea Gung, executive director of Duo Duo Animal Welfare Project, hopes that the ban on serving dog at the festival will have a “domino effect” that leads to the collapse of the pet meat trade entirely.

Thousands of dogs can rest easy tonight, and so can owners and dog lovers all over China, knowing that their beloved pets will not be on the menu for this year’s festival. Sign this petition to thank the Chinese law for placing this important ban.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Governor Chen Wu,

Thank you for banning the sale and distribution of dog meat at the annual Yulin Dog Meat Festival. Too many dogs have died to become the main dish at this festival, some even stolen from their owners’ homes.

We applaud your decision to do right by these animals and to put their welfare above tradition, and we hope that this will be the first step in shutting down the pet meat trade entirely in the future. Thank you for saving the lives of thousands of dogs this year.

Sincerely,

THIS IS FAKE NEWS…YULIN WILL CONTINUE REGARDLESS OF 11 MILLION PETITIONS HAND DELIVERED AND NOT ACCEPTED..!

  2. Kalliope M. says:

For me this is only one little step in the right direction – and I’m sure YULIN will continue; I have big doubts, that this ban really will work all over the country. As long as this sensless cruelty towards animals will happen, China to me will be a disgusting degenerate country which I will boycott in any way!

  3. Those PEOPLE will NEVER STOP China is disgusting BOMB THEM

  4. So hope this is true! I don’t trust China to do everything in its power,,, if it is true,,,, how about stopping all Animal torturing & cruel festivals etc we’ll see when June 21 comes around!!!
    R.I.P ALL ANIMALS XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

  5. China says something like this every year in an attempt to deflect criticism and make protesters go away. I’ll believe it when it happens. Not signing until then.

  6. Gen Lovyet Agustsson says:

its hard to tell if china stopped it or not.

  7. Wow, @Lisa Acuna. That’s nothing like true, and pretty much the least effective way to persuade people. This is awful, but there are worse things going on in every country, and no-one is disgusting just for being part of a certain country.

  8. Sandra Z says:

As always this has been proven to be false.

  9. THIS IS NOT TRUE! DON’T BELIEVE THIS! NOTHING HAS CHANGED…CRAP LIKE THIS ONLY HURTS THE MOVEMENT! SHAME ON THIS FALSE NEWS! KEEP SIGNING PEOPLE AND NEVER STOP!

  10. PLEASE TAKE DOWN THIS PETITION AS THERE IS NO BAN ON DOG MEAT AND THE FESTIVAL IS GOING ON AS PLANNED! I mean, Jesus, talk about fake news!!!!!!!!!!
