University Must Stop Ignoring Sexual Assault Allegations

Target: Dr. David E. Garland, President of Baylor University

Goal: Ensure that sexual assault allegations on your campus are not swept under the rug, but met with investigations and punishments.

A federal lawsuit was filed against Baylor University alleging that its football players routinely recorded gang rapes and dog fights during hazing parties. More than a dozen women have sued Baylor and said that officials have been ignoring or mishandling reports of sexual assaults for years. The woman filing the current lawsuit was allegedly raped by 4 or more players after possibly being drugged at a party, and alleges that the players later burglarized her apartment and harassed her and her family until she left the school.

Allegedly the Baylor football team–in addition to staging dog fights at parties–had freshman players bring girls to parties to drug them, gang rape them, and share video of it with the rest of the team as a “bonding experience.” Baylor officials did not comment on specific allegations, but released a statement that officials tried for months to reach a settlement with the woman. A settlement is a completely sub-par response to such serious incidents. Demand that officials punish the responsible parties, acknowledge and denounce the actions that have taken place at the school, and ensure that they will never happen again.

Dear Dr. Garland,

The lawsuits being filed against Baylor University regarding incidents of sexual assault are indicative of a deeper pattern, and cannot simply be pushed away with a settlement. Baylor has been sued for similar reasons many times before, and the women filing the lawsuits have said that officials mishandled or completely ignored sexual assaults. This is an issue that cannot continue and must be dealt with.

According to the lawsuit, Baylor football players are allegedly staging dogfights and bringing girls to parties to drug and gang rape them, while recording it to share with their teammates. Players allegedly burglarized and harassed one of their victims until she left school, and her account lines up with previous legal filings. I urge you to address the horrifying actions happening on your campus by punishing those responsible, and stop trying to sweep sexual assaults under the rug.

  1. If these men are drugging and gang-raping women, they should be prosecuted and imprisoned.
If university officials are covering up these crimes, they are complicit and should also be prosecuted.
These are horrifying allegations. Do these things really happen in universities? If so, it’s no wonder there are so many misogynistic and abusive men in the corporate and political arenas.
